I want to host my own website on my computer (http://24.235.161.244), but don''t know of any web server software. Does anyone have any recommendations? I tried using Xatimi and Abyss, but couldn''t get them to work. Please excuse my being an idiot with this web stuff. I''m a programmer, not a web designer.

I just decided yesterday to do the same thing. My girlfriend''s sister gave me her old computer so I decided to install linux and run a webserver off of it. This site has helped me so far. I''d love to hear any advice from anybody on these boards as well (I''d ask questions, but I don''t want to hijack Rob''s thread).

Definitely Apache.

It''s really not that complicated to start using, but it has loads of advanced options if you want, and It runs on linux so you don''t even need an amazing computer to run it (I mean, old computers can still be used).

Within a few hours of starting it I was getting weird requests which (with a little bit of research) i found would have infected an unpatched IIs.... (I can''t run IIS on Xp home anywaway)

So, I installed Apache 2.0.47 from the official site but whenever I go to http://localhost, it for some reason links to http://search.shopnav.com/apps/epa/epa?cid=shnv9886&s=localhost . I bet anything this is damn spyware, or something, so I''m going to go try it out with Mozilla.

Also, sometimes when I load http://localhost/, it just sits there and loads forever.... Anyone else had this problem? I am behind a firewall, so I deactivated it. But, still had the same problems... Anyone have any clue what''s wrong?

Try typing in 127.0.0.1--if it still tries to redirect, check your proxy settings.

If you want a simple Windows webserver use MyWebServer, you can download here http://www.mywebserver.org/us/ This is a extremely easy-to-use webserver, takes less than a minute to configure. If your website requires more security or more features you might want to use Apache.

ACtually, Now I''m using my dads as a permanently on router, I''d like to be able to serve images, except he doesn''t want me to install apache for some irrational reason.

Which is the best, simple one? I tried mywebserver except it won''t let me access localhost without some password...

If someone just wants to serve up images e-mail me @ jmickela at sbcglobal dot net. I can set you up with an FTP account on my server.

Edit: As long as they arn't images that will be accessed all the time. I don't want to kill my bandwidth, I only have DSL.

Where do I find my proxy settings? Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings? What do I do?

AHHHH!

On the MyWebSever control panel below the configure button is a button with the word "passwords". Click the "passwords" button and a window should popup, at the bottom of the window uncheck "Enable Password Authentication For Server 1".

did you make sure the apache service is actually running?
also, make sure you''ve got the port set to 80 in httpd.conf. If you change httpd.conf at all, make sure to restart the apache service.
