DDoS?

Hi, I was just wondering... is there any good way to defend against a denial of service attack? A weblog site I frequent (xanga.com) has been down for days due to such attacks, and are apparently still suffering the attacks, and of course there''s the worry of the effects of msblast which will be DDoS''ing Microsoft.
