Is there a way of embedding game resources, such as pictures and sounds, inside a Linux program, just like Microsoft''s (how can I say such a thing in this forum?) resources (.res or .rc)?

You can embed pictures in your C programs in .xpm format, but it's not pretty. You'd probably be better off just putting an app directory somewhere that contains whatever data you need. The standard places are /usr/share/<appname>/ and /usr/local/share/<appname>/
