Well...

Newbie: I am learning GW Basic and was wondering if anyone out there has the complete listing for a 3D real time Space Sim I could use to base my kick-ass new game idea. I play Donkey Kong alot so I know I can write games.

Moderate: I am having problems blending my 16K by 16K 32bpp texture onto a sphere, my 2 meg Voodoo2 keeps bursting into flames. Any ideas?

Expert: I am using the GNU compiler (as I hate Microsoft and Borland are a bunch of weaners), why is my life miserable and anything I write take at least twice as long as it would if I used profesional tools.

Transcendant: I am using a tessalated back-hoe vector and was wandering if applying Tosser's extraction would result in an anti-postulated ream or just a postulated one?

Generally newbies end up saying something stupid that gives them away. It''s easiest to figure out by looking at the help-wanted forum, since they usually ask stuff like: "Hey, anyone want to help on my new 3D engine?!?!?!?!? I JUST LEARNED TO MAKE SHOPPING LISTS IN TURBO C!!!!!!".

Generally, though, it''s not like it''s some sort of blight to be a newbie. In fact, they''re sort of good for a bit of humor.

I was kind of the newbie that wasn''t. I started coming here just to read everyone''s general ideas and opinions, but couldn''t resist posting. Usually my posts would ask for a little bit more detail on the thread topic. Now I actually contribute to the discussion. Guess it just never occured to me to ask about 3D engines and such.

I''m not really a "newbie" but im not a very advanced programmer either. There isnt anything wrong with newbies unless they start being moronic idiots and trying to do things they cant(like it says on my sig) , and when they find out they cant they start screaming that noone will help them and we are all like spawn of satan or something.

Come, help me program my 3d game, i just picked up a new copy of Learn C++ in 21 days!

Deltavie, shut up. GNU makes great tools, and I use both M$ and GNU''s compilers.

Anyway:

Newbie: I just got my copy of "Learn C++ in 24 hours" and Im ready to make another Quake, anyone wanna help?

Expert: I bypassed the surface rendering routine and blitted my face into AOE2 as a kick ass warrior of death.

Newbie: Someone that ask a question in such a way that you can tell there was absolutely no research on there part what-so-ever.

Experienced: Someone that ask a question in such a way that you can tell they researched and did there own homework first.

Someone seems to have watched one too many episodes of star trek voyager...

I guess there still seems to be a quantum jump between newbie and moderate. Any idea where I fit in? I''m currently working on an engine for a 2d platform game, but have just decided to rewrite the part of it I already did in C into C++... does "fool" describe me well?

You can be a moron very successfully without being a newbie...case in point: Me.

ImmaGNUman chill out dude. I''m poking fun. The cheesy grinned smiley face should of indicated that. I am sorry if I offended any humourless programmers out there. The post was intended to amuse.

From what I''ve read so far, it would be easy to gather that newbies are basically people that ask stupid questions. So what category do those people that come in and ask a sensible question on their very first post fit into? My very first post was a question in reference to a problem I was having simply initializing a DirectDraw surface with a backbuffer attached. I certainly considered myself a newbie to this forum, and even a newbie to using DirectX (At the time of the post I''d had about 20 minutes of direct exposure to DirectX)

Good point. Newbie at what? Programming? C++, DirectX?, Heart and Lung Transplant surgery?

It is all relative. I always preferred the term ''virgin'', i.e. some one who has never written sophisticated software.

Random Number generator - not sophisticated
Map editor - sophisticated
C++ tutorial task - not sophisticated
A Working sprite engine - sophisticated
.....

you get the idea

Newbies are also the kind of people who write posts saying, "Come on its been an hour someone, reply!" Sometimes they write posts in ALL CAPS with profanity.

not everybody who asks newbie questions are newbies though. for example:

I am an artist (NOT a newbie artist either)...not a programmer...but if i have to learn about the skeletal meshes of the characters or something else being used by the engine...ill ask them...(not here of course...to the person directly)

ok...i dont know what my point is...i got lost somewhere...distracted by by my shiny mouse. shiny, shiny mouse. wow look at it!!!

.basically...YES newbies are funny (i like to point my finger and laugh at them)
