I use D3DX. It greatly simplifies the boring tasks (initialization, destruction, surface restoration, display-mode changing, etc.) and still lets you use D3DIM directly. So I''d go with D3DX unless you really want 100% control of everything.
I haven''t used the framework, someone else''ll have to help you with that.

Hey hey, I just got my Dedicated status

Anyway, I mainly use ogl here, but I used d3d for a while and found it a bit hard to init, in the weekend, I tried out d3dx a little, I won''t use it, but it is IMO much easier to get started with than straight d3dim

All the D3D samples on the DXSDK use the framework. There isn't that much documentation on how to use the framework, but the source code is included in the samples directory. There is a small article on how to use the framework here.

This is kind of unrelated. Whenever I try to run a program that uses d3dx for initialization, it freezes my computer. I have a Diamond Monster Fusion (voodoo banshee) which I am sure is the problem. But does anybody know how to fix it?

With regards to the d3dx lib, it seems there are two memory leaks when I run it against boundschecker..
