I''m just wondering - are there any openGL extensions that support a way to use volumetric fog, using a form of glFogCoordfExt(), with indexed vertex arrays? thanks for any input.

There definitely are, I have used them in my first terrain engine:

PFNGLFOGCOORDPOINTEREXTPROC glFogCoordPointerEXT;

...is the declaration you need, initialize it the same way as all other extension entry points.

I used it like this:

glEnableClientState( GL_FOG_COORDINATE_ARRAY_EXT );
glFogCoordPointerEXT( GL_FLOAT, 0, fpFogCoordArray );

so i ASSUME ( hope my memory serves me here ) that the 0 is the amount of packing (i.e. bytes between entries in the array i pass it) the last param is the array itself.

hope this helps, and if not at least you now know which function to google for.
