While I was sitting at my computer the other day, something hit me. It was a thought. I asked my self why the hell I love programming so much. I though "I guess I just like solving problems". But then something else crept into my mind. I think that it is the ultimate skill to master because you can't( I hope you understand that). No matter how much you strive there is always someone better than you. But I like that. Programming is something which can never get boring because you are always learning about something new(or discovering it your self). Anyway tell me why you love programming.... -David Edited by - bully on 6/29/00 3:24:00 AM

I think the reason I love to program is simply because I like to get better at it. I like the feeling you get when you accomplish something new and difficult. I always try to find something just out of my skill range and then learn how to do it. This is what I love about programming, you can never run out of goals that you can set for yourself.

At the moment I''m just starting on a 3D engine, there will be plenty of new things for me to learn and I''m fairly sure I won''t run out of ideas or techniques that I will want to implement. No matter how long you have been programming, there are always new techniques to try and new algorithms to explore; and if you ever do run out of interesting techniques to try you can just invent your own.

I don''t really like the programming process itself as much as I like the feeling I get when I get to see what I have created. I love flipping on my machine, double-clicking on one of my games, and saying, "Wow, look what I made..."

I''m not sure exactly, but I find it kind of fun to code.

I like to know how everything works, why it works. I like to know "I made that" or that I''ve got control how thats going to work. I like it when I finally finish something I''ve been working on a while, or fixing a major problem. I suppose that fits into the problem solving aspect then...

What other skill holds the potential to create so many things? With programming skills you can create entertainment, education, business, manufacturing control, manufacturing quality, information management, information presentation, medical aids... the list goes on. I can think of no other skillset in the world that is nearly as flexible or encompassing in scope.

That''s why I like programming in general. I like programming games because it''s fun.

I do it for the glamor, all those late nights over a keyboard speaking to myself and a vast technical language turns the chicks on something rotten. I have to beat them off with a big stick.

But seriously, I love it becuase I can build things. Its like Lego, but better, there are no razor ship blocks of plastic on the floor to stand on in your bare feet. Wait a minute, there are.

I love figuring out how to make the computer do what I want. Doesn't even need to be usefull, just unique.

I also like the control. I like being able to say, "I wish our routine editor had THIS option. Wait, I'll just go add that!"

I enjoy programming because I like to sit back (like many others) after I''ve finished a small project, and see it work. Even when I was expirementing with I/O stuff, where it asks for your name and spits out a funny message with that name in it.

It sounds simple but that''s what programmins all about. The fruits of your labor, and those fruits taste pretty sweet to me.

...anyway, I think it''s all those things (except for the girls. that must be a local phenomenon.)

Oh come on we all know why we like programming. We like it because it allows us to prove what we already know... We''re smarter than general populas.

Well Now,

The reason I like to program is because
I feel like I''m creating something out of
nothing. I am making an actual computer
Program from lines of text.
WOW what a liberating feeling.

chewy, I knew that before I started programming.

Well, I'm not in the same boat as Chewy. Most of my code I don't show to anyone. With the programs I use at work, noone knows that I wrote them unless one of the other programmers mention it. (which they often do, forcing me to show all the features I've put into them)

I program for my own benifit. Not so I can brag about how good I am.
