When I read some of these posts I see that some people have frame rates of 2000+ fps. When I render windowed 1280 * 1024 I only get about 150 fps on my GeForce 2. Why can''t I get these high rates even when I render NOTHING on the screen?

I get around 1800-1900 fps with my software renderer when I render nothing to the screen. But before I downgraded my Gefroce 3 drivers I got only like 400. if you have the latest nvidia drivers on an older card, your fps will be low. get some older drivers, and I think You''ll like the difference.

Is this the only possible way to get high frame-rates?
I''m currently using Windows XP and the oldest XP drivers I could find also gave this low frame-rate.
Is it possible that I have a stuctural problem in my render-pipeline or in the creation of my render device?

I believe the reason you''re not getting the crazy framerates everyone else is because your window is so big, and you have an older graphics card. I myself only get around 600 FPS on my very streamlined engine running at 1024x768 (granted, I render a LOT) but this makes an enourmous difference. On my old Comp*q with an onboard gfx card, I could run rendering nothing at like 9000 fps if the window was 300x200...

You might also want to check your FPS counter. It can very often lead you astray in the actual count. Take a look at how the DXSDK does it--they do it right.

Good luck!

Why do older drivers yield better speeds?

I have a Geforce 2, lastest drivers - which owuld be best for me to use?

In windowed mode those 1.3 million pixels have to be copied from the back buffer to the front buffer. Try fullscreen with D3DSWAPEFFECT_DISCARD or _FLIP and you''ll probably get a much higher rate as the back buffer doesn''t have to be copied.

He''s getting 150, don''t think his monitor runs at 150h.

Yeah, if he''s getting 150 FPS he''s probably not VSYNCed -- there aren''t many monitors that can refresh that fast.

I don''t understand what your point is or what it has to do with my response.

So you want insane frame rates at high resolution on an old card using windowed mode? Not going to happen.
