Network Sharing

I''m trying to access some shared folders on my windows 2000 Server. I''m not running a domain right now, so both my personal machine and the server are sitting in the same workgroup. However, when I try and access my server the workgroup. (double click the machine websrv1), it asks me to login. So I login with the DC servers aministrator Username and Password, but I get this error message. "\\Websrv1 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network name cannot be found." I think it might have something to do with the security policies on websrv1, or maybe some permissions for the administrator user, but I can''t find anything. Thoughts?

You need to make sure you're trying to use the administrator account on the server. To do that specify your username as:

[Server Name]\administrator

and the the servers administrator password.

Failing that try enerting the UNC name directly to the share in the START --> RUN menu e.g.

\\ServerName\ShareName

as oppose to going through Network Neighbourhood. Make sure the share permissions are set at full control for everyone (the idea being to cut them down with NTFS permissions in a client-server environment).

Also - see if you can access the default administrative shares on the server. Try START --> RUN

\\[Server Name]\C$

and then supply the administrator account and password. What happens?

When I try the \\[Server Name]\C$ method, and it asks me to login, I use the server administrator account, and I get a window that says "\\Websrv1\C$ The network path was not found."

What operating system have you got on your client machine? If it is Win9x, ME or XP Home you'll need to make sure that NETBIOS is enabled in the TCP/IP properties of your server.

You are sure TCP/IP is set up correctly on both machines right? Using the same addressing scheme and subnet mask?

Also, check out this site.

Now that you mention operating systems, I''m going to take a shot in the dark and say that it matters if the server is Datacenter server.

And yes, I''m running XP home.
