Does anyone know if it is considered piracy to download TV episodes? The reason I ask is I''m intrested in downloading every episode of Farscape, but that would be quite a lot of illegal data to own if that''s the sort of thing you can''t download. Thanks.

AFAIK, it is just as illegal as movies or music.

If they are not on DVD (Andy Richter Controlls the Universe), download them. Though yes, it is illegal, which, might be considered morally wrong, we''ll let you decide.

There are a lot of illegal things that are not enforced. Look on dumblaws.com for some.
I don''t find it immoral either, BTW.
Why is it legal to tape your shows from the TV, but it''s not legal to get them from the internet? Some might say that you don''t see the commercials, so the TV doesn''t get money for it. While that is true, the quality is usually lower, so..

Yes it''s illegal, just as downloading movies is. If you really want them, grab your wallet and buy them on DVD.

You know, I think part of the problem (especially when talking aobut downloaded TV eps) is that you can either download it and watch it within a day, or you have to wait like 6 months before they release it on DVD. If they let you download it from them for a price, I think that would cut down on it a lot. Same goes with movies because sometimes its possible to get them a week before the theater releases them. They should distribute faster!

Ahh, yes, I''m sure there would be no punishment from the government but my school (TN Tech), on the other hand, would surely take away any computer access I have.
Naturally, this would make being a computer science major rather difficult.

Thanks for the info.

I''m not certain, but I think it is technically illegal to tape TV shows.

Taping TV shows and downloading them are two different things. Generally when you tape a TV show you tape the advertisements as well but when you download a TV show you do not also download the advertisements.

Now, yes, you can avoid taping the advertisements when taping a TV show by stopping the recording at the beginning of the ads and then starting it at the beginning of the show but then you theoretically still have to watch the ads (and if you''re there to do that then the question is why are you taping the show?)

That is pretty murky there. Its legal to own a Tivo, but its not legal to move the TV shows off the tivo''s harddrive? I can store a TV show for as long as I want on the Tivo, yet I can''t store it in any other media?

Nope. Perfectly legal. This was determined by a case in 1982, whereby the MPAA tried to ban VCR''s entirely.

They were denied, and we were treated with the eternal wisdom of Mr Jack Valenti, head of the MPAA:

quote:

I say to you that the VCR is to the American film producer and the American public as the Boston strangler is to the woman home alone.

Mr Valenti, Let me be the first to give you the Double Deuce Salute: PISS OFF.

Actually... I think that''s an interesting idea. Paying for downloading the TV episodes. I don''t actually find it that illegal, but I''d pay a price for it if they offered it. (but not too much mind you... like a $1 per episode or something. Maybe discounts for purchaseing entire seasons.)

I just say that it''s pretty hard to have remorse for doing this kind of "illegal" stuff when only people who have Broadband can really download it and they (including me) have to pay $45 bucks a month for the internet service. You eventually run out of legal things to do with such speed and ability... well I do anyway... not... impling anything... But I would consider heavily purchasing the episodes for $1 each It would be sensible I think... Because not only do they get the episodes out to the public faster than on DVD, but they save a lot of money. They don''t have to work in the DVD remastering and such... (they can later if they want though, for those people who want it... but I don''t really need, nor want it, I just want the shows)

Later!
