Hello. I would like to write a series of articles on the basics of C++. Part 1 will go over the basics of console programming. It will explain printing to the console, basic console functions, basic data types, gathering inmput from the user, logical statements, and end with a simple guess the number game. Part 2 will go over more advanced console functions such as casting, enums, structs, random number generation, clearing the screen, and some Windows console functions. It will end with a revised version of the guess the number game applying what the reader has learned. Part 3 will discuss pointers. Part 4 will discuss classes. Part 5 will wrap every thing up, going over reading from a file and reading to a file, macros, bitwise operators, and functions. Should I go ahead and start on it? If so, I will try to have Part 1 ready by the end of this month. Scott Simontis e-mail:ageofscott@comcast.net AIM:ssimontis

Try to make sure that you don''t include anything that is not part of the C++ standard. If you use platform specific calls then that make sure you note them as "For this platform only". Don''t want to maintain the myth that Visual C++ == C++

Otherwise sounds like a good plan.

Good point. I will try to do some research into a Linux equivalent as well.

If you want to do some console stuff in linux then I would suggest taking a look at ncurses. It is a text based gui that allows you to do some nice simple screens with text windows, colour, cursor position etc. Again this is not part of C++ but an additional library that you use so may be not really what you are looking for in a C++ series.

I heard about ncurses. I might just write my own function.

I think you should start with part 3, there are a lot of good tutorials covering the basics for beginners over the net. I''m more interested in intermediate/advance tutorials.

my 2 cents

There are loads of great articles. If someone can''t be bothered to read those then why would they read yours. There''s a point where you can''t dumb it down anymore.

Your time might be better spent researching other people''s C++ tutorials and you could review them and link to them.
