David Blane, that street magician guy, does a trick where he supposedly levitates himself in front of people, on the street, with no apparent ability to setup rigging. I''ve seen it on TV, it''s pretty freaky, but I''m not disregarding the possibility that it could be faked. I don''t know the supposedly "normal" people on his show, they could be paid extras. The camera usually zooms in on his feet so that you only see that part of him. I don''t recall them ever backing away, like, 20 feet, so that we could see a significant area around him to verify nothing was touching him. So, any theories?

Nope, it's easy - they've shown how he does it on TLC (Davide Blane didn't show how, some other cool guy did).

Ok - first things first - you stand on one foot and balance the other to look like you're levitating (quite simple, I've freaked a lot of people out that way).

Then you get a professional camera/sound crew.

Then you tape the crowds reaction the whole time while taping you.

Then, when the crowd has left, hook yourself up to a harness and lift yourself up slowly. (with the help of a set of pullys).

Then have tv effects guys take out the harness so you look like you're floating.

Then splice it all together so you have the crowds reaction in there just right to make it look like you actually leviated quite far off the ground.

It's a thing you can only on 'the tee vee'.

Oh well, you CAN however do the levitation illusion any time - just make sure lights aren't shining on the foot that you're holding yourself up with.

Have fun!

Edit - my spelling is teh suck!

This might be a weee bit off topic but:

Isn''t this that same guy? David Blaine, right? Apparently he wants to lock himself in a plexiglas box and subside from eating any food for 50 days.

What a fake!!!

Anyone knows that David Copperfield is the only real magican and leviator. He just not only levitates, but actually flies up into the air. He even flies through rings, and down into a box.

I had the chance to see his show when he visited Finland a few years ago, highly impressive I have to say. The whole show, not just the flying thing was very believeable with many great tricks. And now I know that he is NOT using any camera tricks in the tv shows. He is also a very good story teller, that makes you get into the feeling totally, and add all those special effects, adding yet another dimension.

So I highly recommend everyone that like theese kinds of things and have a chance to see his shows, go and do it. It's much better than on tv, and you will like tv shows better after that too. And another recommendation, don't try to find out how he does it, too much, but try to enjoy the show, it's more worth it that way, he is very skilled and it's unlikely that you find out it there. You could just watch a videotape if you want to do that, and it's much easer that way too.

There's more info about Copperfield on his website. There's also a very low resulution clip of his flying.

PS. I don't actually believe he is flying for real In fact I know, how he does it now, but it looks really real, and the fact that he flies inside a box for example, makes it look even more real.

Yah...anyway.

David Blane could do that easily - it was also exposed how they do something like that.

I''ll give you a hint - it involves a body double, taking shifts, a trap door, and a room below.

I explored the link - some of those things, while being simple and lame, are really fascinating. Are there free sites that teach stuff like this (you know, to pull on your friends)? I don't really have the upwards of 80 bucks to pay for a book on how to do it...

Yeah. Speaking of the crowd-reaction thing, they could just splice in video of paid actors pretending to be amazed and then shove that on TV. No reason to actually amaze stupid bystanders by standing on one leg like a flamingo.

well... thats not magic either; it too, is also science. and a very useful branch at that.

I believe the first people to do shit like this were some early buddhist gurus, but secret agents and astronaut periodically have to go through this training. I know this cause my grandpa was a secret agent, and my sister works for nasa . I don''t know why agents have to do it, but astronaut''s got to do it so that they dont go balistic and crazy when something goes wrong and breath in all the cargo air in like a minute. very interesting....

I''ve seen some of his TV specials and stuff... like has already been said, everything he does is scientific and explainable, but that doesn''t mean that it''s not hard to do.

He no doubt has to do a lot of practice/preparation to do the stuff he does... he''s a good magician, entertaining to watch.

about the actors thing, he once did it on some dallas cowboys and they had a similar kind of reaction
