I heard somewhere that many good programmers also have talent in music. Do any of you guys play instruments? I mean, the theory works for me (i''m not necessarily a good programmer but I get by) I play the guitar mainly but also violin, keyboard, bugle, harmonica. So you guys? Hyperdev

As a matter of fact, yes. I can play some piano/keyboard, I''m pretty good at both the trumpet and electric bass guitar. I''m pretty shitty at electric guitar though. I also compose my own music when I have coder''s block. I find that it helps me think clearer.

I play the guitar, and occasionally the drums. I''ve been playing guitar about as long as I''ve been programming (wierd, eh? Maybe there is a connection somewhere ) which is about 5 years now.

I''m quite proficient at the piano.

I don''t see how programming helps you learn to play music. I''ve programmed before and I play the piano, but I don''t see any similarities.

I occasionally play the piano now and then.

I played piano when I was little, and wasn''t too bad for my age, but I quit. So I suppose the theory could have worked for me, if I hadn''t chosen to go against it.
I''d love to be able to play the violin, so maybe one day when I''m on my own and have some privacy I''ll take a shot at it.

I can play the violin/viola (and probably any other stringed instrument if I could bother to learn the base clef), but that''s it. I''m not particularly good at it either.

Programming = Left Brain, and

Music = Right Brain
?

And yet, programming is an art, and music has some logic to it ...

With some people, when you get really deep into the music you begin to think and it triggers off a lot of things in your mind. Music helps you think and be more ratioal at times. It always helps for me.

The link between the two is "creativity", "imagination" and "logic".

EDIT: Besides, I didn't see anyone saying that programming "helps" to play music...

Oh gee, buddy, alot of people that were stricken with an American highschool play or have played an instrument of some sort, including voice. Now.. if you were any good at what you did, then that''d be note-worthy.

I played tympani, because noone else would, and got... "good" at it. I sucked compared to what I imagined every other tympani player would be like, but I was the best we had. Jesus, that sucked. And I had an asshole band teacher as well. Would not leave me alone about it, wanted me in the freakin'' marching band, etc.

I wish I had gone nuts and killed him. Really, I do. He''s like the goddamned principal from Ferris Bueller''s Day Off. Total asshole.

Raw nerve, even after a couple years.

I can''t play anything, but I heard that playing music supposedly helps with math skills (go figure), so maybe that has something to do why a lot of programmers and can play an instrument.

I am a pianist.

Music and programming do share similarities, but they are similarities of discipline rather than on the surface. For example, to learn a Beethoven Piano Sonata from memory requires enormous memory for detail, as well as an intuitive understanding of structure and style. To give a concert, and prepare for it, requires strong nerve, long term planning and the ability to hold that schedule.

This all sounds ( and feels like ) building a project with C++ etc. However, music is not really that mathematical in practise, although the academics do enjoy writing about it in theory. So a pianist doesn't really do much calculus

I played violin for 7 years, and quit after I became tired of doing shows.

Now I play guitar.
