ping 64.118.250.198 and tell me what ttl you are receiving. It should me 255 - N hops but I think mine is initialized at 150. Tell me whether you get under 150 or over 150 but under 255.

While 150 hops should be more than sufficient for anyone accessing the server I''m still curious on how to modify it more for learnings sake than anything.

The ICMP protocol is already standardised. The best you could do is write your own program to em... haxor your outgoing ping packets and change the TTL field.

How come most other servers are able to have 255 which is the maximum ttl? I don''t think all of them are h4x0ring any packet headers.

okay pinging is disabled once again, but my question on modifying the ttl is still valid.

A TTL of 255 is usually assigned to ping packets. That field doesn't have to be 255 though. Remember also that echo return packets will show the amount of router hops taken for the packet to get to its destination in the returned TTL field.

AFAIK, the echo packets show the number which is the amount of hops remaining. i.e if it starts at 255 and is received at 240, it took 15 hops. The question of changing ttl is elusive on google. It almost seems like esoteric knowledge.
