An algorithm for a geodesic dome probably doesn''t exist.. anyway, I was wondering because I was scanning some old threads and I read that the top of the dome is a lot nicer without nearly as many triangles. On the other hand.. anyone have some vertex data ready? I don''t know how I would make the vertices from the idea "there''s a pentagon on top.. then some hexagons.."

I would suggest you begin with the upper half of a octahedron, with all verticies lying on the dome you wish to represent. You then look at each triangle, and make a vertex that lies on the projection (from the centre of the sphere the dome is cut from)of that triangle''s centre point onto the dome you are trying to represent. This point become the vertex for the three triangles that you are replacing the original one with... ie you carry out this procedure on all triangles currently present, and you get a new triangular structure with 3 times as many triangles, and a fairly uniform distribution of verticies on its surface. You repeat this procedure until you have an appropriate number of verticies. I hope you understand the algorithm I am attempting to describe, as reading it back, it sounds a little confusing.

You mean geospheres? Maybe I''ll eventually get around to seeing if it works better than the method I''m using (phi-theta angles.. does it have an actual name?), but it seems hard to me. I understand the idea, but I was wondering about geodesic domes.

Take a look at http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/~pbourke/modelling/sphere/

Hopefully this will give you some ideas, and maybe better explain dmounty''s suggestion.

The diagrams are nice, anyway.
