is there any point in having over 4Gb of ram if you only have a 32 bit processor? How about them apples?

Get 4GB, then let me know if you still need more.

My system board can only take up to 2GB (2x 1GB max sockets).
I''ve only got 256MB Need an upgrade!

i don''t actually have 4Gb of RAM in my computer either(256Mb). I am just wondering since i think it is possible to buy 1Gb ram chips now - it would be possible to have 4Gb of ram on your computer if you wanted to and providing your motherboard could support it. However since the pentium 4 are only 32 bit there wouldn''t be any point in going over this limit.

When I upgraded from 768MB to 1GB, I noticed the huge speed difference of 0% - in other words, why would you want four gigs of RAM (unless you''re editing movies and stuff like that)?

Not for a personal pc, but I can see possible benefit on a server running an application with tons of clients. On my pc at home, I''ve got a 2.0 gig processor and 512MB of RAM, and I''ve never had any performance problems. Not even when I''ve got Warcraft III running simultaneously with Media Player and IE (on XP). Sometime in the next year I''ll probably add another 512 chip, but I honestly don''t see any games or programs coming along any time soon that really tax my resources.

U cant have >4Gb ram on a regular PC (with P4 or AMD Athlon).
You could get 4Gb to show off.

A bright ideea: (dunno how to do it, or if possible) use a RAM drive and run windows from there which would be really cool.

How does a computer with a 32bit address space address more than 4GB? Conventionally it''s not possible, unless there''s some funky hardware out there that does it.

A 64 bit computer can theoretically address 16777216 terrabytes. Which is just obscene

I think the P4 and AMD XP can actually address 64gb of ram, because they''ve got 36 address lines instead of 32. You would however need a mobo that can take up to 64gb of ram and also a modern OS (i.e. 2000/XP or Linux).

Modern motherboards (ok, I only know for sure about the newest Athlon MB''s, with nForce2 Ultra 400 chipset) can only have 3Gb of ram, even if they have four slots.

I''ve noticed that the BUS speed of the RAM matters so much more than the actual amount of RAM that it''s frightening.

Until you turn of the computer and everything goes away.

You can actually get drives that are nothing but flash ram (I believe, maybe some other type of non-volatile ram) and use them as regular drives, but they are insanely expensive.
