Scripting Languages

I''m developing a 3d engine right now (with a group of people), and have been elected to design the scripting language. My question would be: what''s the best way to do the language, i.e. interpreters, or compilers. Another option would be to use the C/C++ compiler, but that wouldn''t be as powerful, I''d imagine. I know that the question isn''t too specific, so here''s some of the things that we need it to be able to do. We need to be able to script AI, and we need to be able to script events(still not too specific, and I''m flexible to anything). I heard about some sort of tool to develop scripting languages, somewhere, but I can''t seem to find it. One more option would be to implement an existing scripting language into the engine. Actually this would be great, because I have a lot of other things that I need to do. Does anybody know anyplace where I could find tutorials on this, that tool (or a similar), an existing scripting language(needs to be simpler than C/C++, but not as weak as BASIC), or have any opinions on the above? I''m not asking for anybody to take me by the hand, but anything would help. This will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I''ve not heard of a tool for developing scripting languages (obviously this doesn''t mean there isn''t one), but you can use lex / yakk to quickly create the lexer and parser (there is also flex / bison and something like flex++ / bison++). Those two things are a major portion of the job.

You could use JAVA or Python as scripting language. I don''t know anything about Python, but you can use the JNI to mix JAVA and C++.

I spent a little while playing with the development of a scripting language myself. I never bothered to finish it though. You can take a look at the project at my web page. If you have any questions about the work I have done just ask. My scripting language compiles the code. I finished the project for the most part except for the parser, and the exported variables, and the functions (I did finish the exported functions though), and.... It might give you some ideas though.

For some good starters take a look at the article series about making a scripting language on flipcode. I read the first two or so and it looked pretty good so far.
