I''d just like to know the average age of everyone here, and at what age they started programming. I picked up my first DOS C++ book a few months ago, and now I''m getting into Win32, and I''ll be 15 in August. Have I started late? Early? Average? I''d just like to know if I''ll be talking to peers, elders, or (very unlikely) little kids.

I''m 20. I started programming when I was about 8, using a commodore 64 and Basic.

However, I don''t think there IS an ideal age to start programming. As long as you are intelligent, enjoy problem solving (this is important), and are prepared to put the effort and time in, you will get better.

I''m 23 and I started programming when I was 15 (QBasic). Although I think it is good to start programming early, in my experience you learn more from working in a team with others than you ever will by yourself. That said, I''ve learned more in the past year than I did in the previous 7.

I''m 18, I started when I was 12 or so (6th grade sometime).
I started out w/ pascal. I made one little hello world prog. Then I didn''t do any programming again till 11th grade, cause I didn''t have a computer, on account of I didn''t live w/ my dad anymore. So then my junior year of hs I learned ti-basic for the ti-83 and then went on to asm and then this year learned c++.

but enough about me. I''m gonna get my 8 year old bro started on logo writer soon He''ll be awesome at programming. a friend of mine and I once talked about getting our kids (no we don''t have any yet) started on programming b4 they can talk...that way they would speak machine code by the time they were 3 or so!!!
now that''d be cool...well, except for the probability of social problems in the children. But who cares if they can program!

Thanks for the replies.

And I agree. Kids that could speak machine code would be set for life.

Don''t worry. You''re not late. I''m 29 and started when I was 25. Actually, I wrote my first program when I was about 8 or 9 at Radio Shack But my parents never had the money to pick up a comp so they completely discouraged me from aspiring to be a programmer. I put it out of my mind until I got my first computer, so now I''m playing catch-up.

howdy. I''m 15. I''ll turn 16 late next Februrary. I know C and a little x86 assembly. I''m learning C++. As far as API''s I am learning OpenGL I know the basics of DirectX. I plan on learning more on Direct3d. I am currently writing a 3d bomberman clone using OpenGL. I hope to be done in about 1 month. I have everything completed but the AI and some more modeling. If you''re learning DOS I would suggest Borland Turbo C++. It''s the easiest. It''s even free now. If you''re a die hard DJGPP it''s ok, but the flat memory mode (or whatever it''s called) really stinks.

I''m 21, can''t really say when I started programming, serious programming was about grd 8 I suppose ? before that I had messed around on a 3+ Spectrum, what age can''t be sure, but before I went to high school, maybe 10yrs old, I really can''t rem !!! I had a father who was really into PC''s I might have even programmed on the previous spectrums ? 128k ? I think but my first real recollection of a actual programme was a Multiple choice question game on the 3+, ( I had just learnt Ifs !!!! )

Wow I''m getting old !!! can''t ever rem when I was a child anymore, *sniff* I think I''m going to go cry !

I''m 17, and I started programming in Pascal when I was 10. I fairly quickly switched to C though.
