Ok, heres the deal. I am still in the land of ancient times. QBasic was powerful BEFORE i knew the alphabet but I''ve got to let it go. Can someone help me PLease. THe only two languages I know are Qbasic and VisualBasic. I need to make an Online interactive or a platform commercial game but those 2 languages are worth anything. Could you get me out of the ENIAC era and give me some basic tips of how to program in C++, Java, you know, the big boys. Mory 16 yrs old

Easy:

Look into either buying some books :

Tricks of the windows game programming gurus
Windows 98 programming

or get yourself a copy of a c / c++ compiler and enroll in a class at your local college.

The two books above are good for the following reasons:

Windows 98 Programming will explain all the ins and outs of windows programming, using GDI.

TOTWGPG includes two CD''s (one has the source code to the book, the other a copy of VC++ )

I bought a book by Herbert Schildt (windows 95 programming) and it taught me a lot about windows, the latest version of this book has been updated for windows 98 (the book above)

TOTWGPG (a re-write and a hell of a lot better than Games programming for dummies) will help you with DirectX, which you''ll probably have to use for the multi player acpect.

IMHO Getting a few good books and trail and error is the best way to learn.

Oh and another book I''ve got is C++ the complete reference, good book deals with C and C++ from the ground up.

If you do get the books, still think about a college course, as you will get help from the (not quite as knowlegable as they want you to think) leacturers.

Do you really think it''s such a good idea to start with Windows programming? Most Windows programming books (including TOTWPG) require you to have good knowledge of C/C++.

Get some sort of books that explains the language C++, not how to use it to make Windows programs. C++ Programming For Dummies perhaps?

I too I''m looking into C++ however I have had several years of experience programming other windows apps in assembler and Visual Basic...
So I don''t want to get into DOS just C++.. however I checked out Chapters on line review of the book "Tips of the Windows Game Programming Guru''s" and it only mentioned one CD with some source code on it... not the C++ CD? Are you sure it''s there or was that a short time special deal?
Thanks,
Ben

P.S. If it comes with a version of C++, is it a student or trial version or something? I think I just might buy VC++

You have to learn basic C/C++ first before going into Windows programming, something that LaMothe's books do not discuss in depth. I learned the basics of it from a class at my high school, and I'd be surprised if you don't have one, Mory. If you don't, try taking a class at a local community college. Or, if you don't want to do either, go to a bookstore and look for some books on C/C++ (there's lots of them, so this shouldn't be too hard). After that, get TOTWGPG and you'll be on your way.

Hehe... Forgot about the Java thing! Go here and click on the link titled something like "Getting Started in Java For Free." It'll tell you where to go for everything.

First of all it''s "TRICKS of the Windows Game Programming Gurus" TOTPWG comes with two CDs: one with the source code to all of Lamothe''s projects, articles, the DX SDK, two online books about 3d, sounds, artwork and some other stuff. Then there''s another CD with Microsoft Visual C++ Introductory Edition. Both CDs should come with the book, if you don''t get both, you''ve been tricked.

Introductory Edition is really the Standard Edition of VC, but you can''t re-distrubute stuff made with it, and an annoying little messagebox pops up before your program starts.

Object Oriented Programming in C++ by Robert LaFore(HINT HINT, get this one)
Tiso
Tiso
C for Dummies Volume 1 and 2 are good.

Note: You can''t use C++ for dummies unless you know C.

All the previous posts mentioned C/C++, so here is a name of a good Java book that will teach you everthing: "Java How to Program" by Deitel and Deitel. Also if you don''t wish to buy a book just yet, goto http://gamelan.earthweb.com/javaprogramming/ and http://www.javaworld.com.

Hope this kinda helped.

silly programmer vb is for kids.
