carcking is for cracking programs to remove 30 trails etc. a hacker is one who logs onto a users system and snoops arouns and doesn''t destroy the hard drive.
Hacking, in the true definition of the word is someone that, basically, teaches themselves everything about computers. Any of us that have not taken classes on programming and such are hackers. A cracker is someone who "hacks" into hard drives, whether or not they do anything when there. BTW, at least in America, cracking is illegal whether or not you do any harm.

Reading is all you can do as a neophyte. Go to www.informit.com and read "Maximium Security: A Hackers Guide" read everything you can get your hands on that deals on the unix system and networking.
What you seem to what to do is cracking. (which is illegal most places) Hackers are usually just really smart self-taught computer people. Hackers are just thought as people harming things because of the media and movies.

Being a hacker was not always so glitcy
Once-upon-a-time being a hacker implied that you knew a little less about the hardware than you should. But because of API only weanies, it now means you know _more about the hardware than you should
