I bought mandrake 9.1 a few days ago, i have been using it (dual boot) for two days now and i already love it... anyway on to the subject: I have been looking for a c++ comiler and linker (linux persion of msvc++) and havnt found anything even resembling a compiler on the installation. is there one on there, if not what is on there that can compile (for a linux beginner). and where could i get an easy to use one... I dont have the computer connected to the internet, so it would need to be eyther small (floppy) or be on a cd that could be delivered Sorry for asking such silly questions... any help would be greatly appriciated. Mandrake ( like almost all distro''s ) comes with a command line C/C++ compiler called gcc/g++.

If you are looking for something more along the lines of the integrated development environment then take a look at KDevelop ( which is also shipped with Mandrake ). It is similar to MSVC studio.

These things may take a bit of time and reading but everything you need should be either a) already installed b) sitting on your Mandrake CD.

thanks, i had a browse on the distro (the other day), but couldnt find anything like that, but i will try again.

Plus, when i put music cd''s into my computer it doesnt recgonise them as music cds, or thinks that they are not compatible... has anyone had this problem, very strange...

i still cant find it, where would it be? and would it be on the standard edition.

Try www.rpmfind.net and search for kdevelop, and look for a package which says it''s for mandrake, and your architecture, but isn''t a .src.rpm. Otherwise it''s probably burried on one of your cd''s as kdevelop-mdk.rpm or something like that. From a command prompt you can rpm -i to install it, otherwise there''s probably a GUI tool, if you can figure out how to use it.

one good way to find out if you have installed the compiler is to open a console and type gcc or g++ and hit enter.

and look better because KDevelop has to be in there.

if you want another editor you may try the ''vi'' command.
and learn how to make a Makefile.
it''s not that difficult. and once you learn it you don''t want to use the msvc any more.

no it isnt, i told the computer to search for anything with the name ''KDev'' it didnt find anything at all. ill try again but i dont think i will find it on there (cd or hard disk)

That might be your problem. You want to look for anything which starts with kdev, not KDev. Case is important under unix, and by convention most package names are all lower case.
