Swordfights!

Original Post
In my opinion, there aren't enough swordfights in games. Thief was the only game where there was quality fencing.

Think about it. What if you could do a real "Three Musketeers" type of fighting. Believe me, that would be one heck of a game!
P.S. Wow, I'm a saint. GDNet has another saintanist!

<-- Yeah, it seems like anyone can be a saint these days
I agree, more swordfights!!
I haven''t played Thief yet, so I don''t know how the controls were, but I would imagine it''s hard to control a realistic swordfight -- that may be why there are so few of them.
Plus, more lopping off limbs would be nice... There''s a point at which blowing off limbs isn''t as fun as just choppin'' off peoples'' heads

Thief was a great game, aboutthe only game I played in a couple of years.
I particularly enjoyed sniping the guards with my bow.

swordfight? nawww. unless it''s realistic (i mean you dont have to rip off someone''s heart 5 times until they die)
and oh... how bout some "critical" places? i mean if you hit someone''s left hand with sword they can still fight, but ig u hit ''em in the balls... c''mon!

Heh, that would suck if you were hit in the nads in a sword fight. I remember fighting the Stalfos knights in Zelda: TOOT and thinking that was a lot of fun. I liked doing that.
Well Now,
I loved playing thief. I liked the
idea of stealth and the sword fighing
was good aswell. I really want to be
able to make great games like that. I
am just anoyed. 12 more weeks of free
time. I like having free time but I''ll
have to wait before I go back to college
to learn C. And there is a HND (lower degree)
in Game developing very near me. Sounds good
any one else have a view. Oh and another
game I loved was Ninja Warriors Again for
the SNES. If I get enough E-mails I post
it on my web site. However I''ll have to look
into the roms legal stuff anyone know anything
about it?

Pascalix: I was about to mention them myself till I saw you post about it
They were pretty cool...
What I''d really love to do... in like 10-20 years when I''m able to... is a 3D swordfighting-RPG in which parts of fight were automated, like shield block and parry depending on stats...
I never played DaggerFall(Wish I had) but I understand that that had a pretty cool system...
And what about Jedi Knight''s light sabers? They coulda been a bit better, but were still really cool, and it was the only melee weapon in a FPS game that I ever used...

I don''t remember anything special about it... there were a couple of different ways to slash, but nothing particularly impressive. (Don''t get me wrong, I think that the game overall was exceptional.).
Apparently, there is a Highlander game in the works. I don''t really know what they have in mind, but I would think that swordplay would play an important role.
Hmm.. what was that game called? had a really advanced sword-fighting system... darn... oh yea! die by the sword! now thats a great (but OLD) game!
I just love playing MP and hurling my enemyes across the field woth the ogre!

What if you could do some really dynamic swordfighting, like ducking under a slash, jumping, and maybe even fight with different weapons.
Think about it. Does it have to be a sword? Wouldn''t a lance or something like Darth Maul''s double bladed lightsaber make for a cool duel?
P.S. Is there a swordfighting game where you actually stab as well as slash?

Well Now,
I suppose I can try and type like this, Hey actuallly it''s a
lot better. Anyway I agree with DarkMage a duel where you could do more would be great.
You could stab, slash, maybe backslash or come down with the weapon with both hands. Oh yeh and how about using your legs and head in a duel too. You know a quick kick to the shin or headbut
that requires a bit of skill could improve things a bit.

I agree with J2xC. Some sword-fighting moves should be automated. Maybe there should be some settings, where one could set which parts to automated (that would be cool for lazy users like me
)
P.S: How’s the sword-fighting in prince of Persia 3d (if you’ve played it)?

The human body is designed to be able to think and react with the human mind quickly, even instinctively. This can't work over a keyboard, so some moves have to be automated...
Sid meier's "Pirates" had a reasonably cool system...
But for "flashy" value... if you had 3rd person RPG, depending on stats, you'd dodge/parry/ or shield block attacks, so you could concentrate on the offense yourself. This could maybe be done with a 3 button mouse... middle jab, left slash, and right something else... combined with a mouseswing type attack technique you use while the button is pressed... However for real impressive value you'd have to have beat em up style button fiddling combo's to jump off wall's and other flashy moves... This is something I've been spending a while thinking about...
To see a really cool fighting system try playing dragon realms This goes the full monty... parry, jab, slice, thrust, lunge, draw, dodge, etc. and makes for an interesting online RPG... however it is text-based...
edit: d'oh... forgot to end that link... fixed it now...

I recently dreamt about sword fighting interfaces. It would be really cool having a set of spatial positionning devices (or simple real-time motion capture) with 3D LED glasses and some kind of stick. You could see every detail of your environment by moving your head and slashing your foes with your stick.
I''d love to work on such a device this fall when I''ll get back to school.

bushido blade was an awesome game. it had the most realistic sword fights i''ve ever seen in a game. and in bushido blade 2 you could use all kinds of weapons... very addictive game, especially when going head to head with a friend. you always start out with "ok first one to 10 wins", then it progresses to "ok, first to 20". I usually ended up playing 100 matches total
hope they make bushido 3.
Hey, imagine if you could have such a realistic sword fight that you used a joystick like you were handling the handle of a sword. I''m not sure if any game has done this (effectively), but I would imagine the result would be pretty good. Imagine the multiplayer possibilities! Well, enough imagining, somebody make it!
