Does anybody have any idea why OR signs get turned into slashes on this board? I mean, I know it''s the board software, but WHY is the board programmed to do that? I can''t think of any reason you''d want it to do such a thing... lntakitopi@aol.com - http://www.geocities.com/guanajam

Umm... yeah. I''m talking about the binary OR signs used in C/C++ variants. They''re vertical lines onscreen. You type them by pressing SHIFT+\ (backslash). Their key is right above ENTER and below BACKSPACE.

I just want to know *why* the forum was programmed to convert OR signs to forward slashes.

Here, I''ll type an OR sign: /
Here''s three of them: ///

See?

That didn''t work.
What does HTML have to do with it? Does HTML hate OR signs or something?

I don''t know about the OR sign specifically, but I know HTML doesn''t like some other characters.

What I want to know, is why do the '<' and '>' tags around my bold comments in my sig get changed to '[' ']' respectively?

Just edit my message to see what I'm talking about. The < b >'s were originally [ b ]'s, but if I put [ b ] in my sig it doesn't show up correctly at all UNLESS I edit the message and click make modifications (without changing anything). INTERESTING, HUH???

I think I figured some of this out. Since we''re mostly programmers, I''ll explain it in code...

OK, say they have a function called Convert() that replaces OR signs with slashes, < B > tags to [ b ], : ) to , etc. Whenever you post a message, it calls Convert() passing the post you entered. Then it appends your signature the result without calling Convert() on your sig. But when you edit a message and click "Make Modifications", it calls Convert() on the whole thing. That''s why the smilies in wrenhal''s signature didn''t show up until after editing (same w/ the [ b ] tags.)

But why, if I put [ b ]''s in my sig, does the bolding NOT work from the beginning then?

yay! it worked. i put it in my signature and it didn''t convert to \

ok, here''s a suggestion: type your whole message in your signature area, then post an empty message (it doesn''t let you post empty messages, so type an space and then enter and you''re done *L*)

btw: don''t forget to change yout signature back after u''re done...

The question is if it’s worth the bother. do we really need OR signs that desperately ?
