If that''s too expensive get gmax. It''s basically 3d studio max without rendering capabilities (I''m sure there''s other differances), and is designed for people who want to mod (and make) games. For that reason, it''s free. Most people without the 3 grand would get it free via other methods, so discreet just took control and offers their own free version.

So if you''re making 3d models for use in OpenGL, Direct3D, or your own renderer, then gmax will work. If you want to render your images for movies/cutscenes, or 2d art, then you''ll have to shell out 3 grand.
