Protest measures

Hi I''ll try to summarize this... I live in Portugal and the government just decided to raise our tuitions... a lot. Hmmm... maybe I''ve summarized it too much . Basically, the government has decided to make a budget cut on the education funds. To cover for this, they''ve decided to raise the tuitions the students pay by 100 to 500 euros. Choosing how much was left to the Universities but, due to the cuts, most of them are required to raise it by the maximum amount. This means an increase of 250%, more or less. This is a lot for a country like Portugal, as the tuitions will now cost around three minimum wages. Although it is possible to get scholarships to cover for this, there are a lot of students who will be unable to get''em and, therefore, might have to drop University due to the sudden increase in the costs. This is why most student associations are organizing protests against such measure. My university (Universidade de Coimbra) has a huge "weight" in the academic area in Portugal (since it was the first Portuguese University, with its foundation dating back to the 13th century). As a protest, we''ll be starting a one-week strike, as well as having a manifestation tomorrow. However, I don''t think this will be enough (personally, I believe the minister couldn''t care less wether or not we go to strike). This is why I decided to ask around the following question: are there any alternatives to a strike that you''d choose as a protest method for this situation? I''ve thought about something like creating a website where people could go, read about this and send a protest e-mail to the government... would you support this kind of measure? Or are there any better ways? Is there anything a regular student like me can do? Pedro

It''s a "per year" tax for public Universities. I know it probably doesn''t sound much compared to countries like the UK, US, Germany, Canada, etc... but considering the wages in Portugal, it''s a huge amount that will affect a large group of students (especially those who study away from home, since this will add up to other important costs, like the room rent).

Forgot to address your suggestion . We sort of have the media on "our side" (a national tv even uncovered something that lead to the resignation of the former education minister). Sadly, that''s not being enough... the government just keeps ignoring everything.

Definitly start a writting campain. One of the main things you should focus on is how society benifits from an educated public.

Violent protests always seem to get a lot of attention. Go to Lisbon with a large following and start a riot.

Edit: You may want to consider burning down Durão Barroso's house (I believe that that's your Prime Minister). If you think it's a good idea, you can look at this site for some tips.

Edit: It seems that Antonio Guterres is no longer the Prime Minister of Portugal.

dede: that''s what I''m thinking... not sure if people will adhere to it... it would be more "pressuring" to the government if it got a widespread view (for example, with foreign people contributing)... but I''m not sure if it''d help. For example, would you support it? (maybe just filling in a small e-mail form and pressing "send", for example).

Raduprv: I''m not sure... I think Portugal is a bit richer than Romania (there''s a good deal of Romanian immigrants here)... but we''re definitely *not* at Spain''s level. Not sure about the average salary, but it''s probably around 800 Euros or so. Minimum wage is around 325 Euros.

Mscgamer: there''s a march already planed. But violent protesting isn''t currently being considered... we don''t want to hurt anyone, we just want the government to stop ignoring us and see our reasons. Antonio Guterres was the former prime minister, the current one is Durão Barroso (he''s a complete idiot, by the way).

Cool, I was close to getting the PM right.

By the way, I was just joking around about the violence.

Well, you could always kidnap the guy responsible for this and cut his fingers off with a cigar trimmer one by one until he agrees to repeal the decision.

Ha ha ha. I''m joking too. Don''t actually do that.

800 euros is an average "very good salary" in our terms. I''m not sure, though... the average is probably between 600 and 800 euros, but I thought I''d point out the top value. But yeah, it''s a lot more than there... I guess that explains the recent boost we had in eastern immigration.

Well, 500 Euro/year is not that bad, if you come to think of it.
In the US it is like 10-100 times more expensive, depending on the university/college.
In Romania, for private universities it's about 800 USD/year.

Oops, it was 800/year not month, sorry.

But this is for public Universities... it represents a huge increase in the current costs (and the cost will probably be 852 euros next year). This wouldn''t be all that important if the social services would garantee equal opportunities for everybody, but that doesn''t happen.
