I recently started to learn COM programming. I want to compile an interface with the MIDL (microsoft interface design language) compiler. MIDL is a command-line compiler that resides in the vc98\bin directory of visual C++. When i try to use MIDL from another directory, it cannot be found. The documentation says to run the vcvars32.bat batch file to set the paths to fix the problem. When i run vcvars32.bat, i get the following output: setting environment for using microsoft visual C++ tools. out of environment space out of environment space out of environment space After running the batch file, the paths are still not setup correctly and thus i still cannot use the MIDL compiler. What do i need to do to use the MIDL compiler? I''m running win98/vc6 standard edition with service pack 4 and i also have VB5 on my machine. thanks

FIRST you need to go into your autoexec and kill and ''SET'' statements that are for things that no longer exist. If that doesn''t work then you need to increase your environment space. I think you add a line to CONFIG.SYS similar to:
device=c:\command.com /x:###
where x=the switch for environment space (sorry don''t remember)
and ####= the amount of space in bytes. default is 256 I think, but I usually prefer 512 or 768

If you are running midl from a DOS box within Windows, then you should right click on the shortcut you''re running the DOS prompt from (the EXACT shortcut you double click to run it) and go to properties. Go to the memory tab, and set the initial environment to however large you want it. I have mine set to 4096. If it''s set big enough, there should be enough space for the variables declared in vcvars32.bat.

Hope this helps...
