Hi, Just wondering, does anybody here paint (for profit)? I was at an art store not too recently, and I noticed that there were a bunch of these small watercolor paintings that were being sold for > $100 and I think it''d be pretty cool if I could get 1337 and make money off of paintings

You can buy a canvas for about $5, get some brushes for $20 or so, and get some oil paints for about $20 or so. You could start with even less.

Would some watercolor paper and a tray of crayola watercolors do me justice for now? I think i''ve got some watercolor pencils laying around somewhere as well. Those were pretty fun

Mark Kohler and William Matthews (note: Matthews has a double ''tt'' in it) paint in watercolors. It''s not easy. You don''t get second chances with white.

Yeah, it does seem like easy money, but I''m not sure how many people buy those. The stereotype of the starving artist is real, but of course there are those who make millions.

I''d certainly like to make enough money from my art so that I wouldn''t have to get a job, but I''m not counting that right now.

Mark Kohler.

Classes might be nice though

I always wanted to try painting. I''ve been a pencil artist for years; my pics need color ...

I''ve yet to check Kohler, but I''m looking at Matthews'' stuff right now and I am very impressed. I think I''ll try something tomorrow! I''ll most definatly fail, but I''ll be sure to post my pathetic results

Uh, $100 for a painting qualifies you as a hobbyist painter, which means your art will be selling at a garage sale in ten years for $10.

Only professional artists are taken seriously with regard to earning money at art. In such a case, every piece should sell for well over $1,000 if you''re an up and comer and worth anything - meaning you''re now a professional. But $1,000 is not very expensive for real art.

Howard Terpning''s works routinely sell for about $100,000 each. Suzanne Baker''s works sell for about $4,000 each. Bob Pummill''s works sell for about $30,000 each.

Visit those art gallery pages (Claggett/Rey and Altermann) and see what real paintings sell for.

Color''s fun to use. It''s got lots of properties that make it interesting. I''m taking an oil painting class right now and it''s made me stop drawing for awhile.

A pencil artist? You mean like Robert Shufelt?

More Robert Shufelt. For his detailed sketches, he's getting over $10,000 per drawing, but it seems most of them have already sold...

Whoah, I never realized how much paintings today can go for.

Bierstadts and Russells are now routinely selling for over a million. Anyway, for every artist who succeeds, I''m sure there are many more who never amount to anything. It seems most successful ones go the route of professional illustrator first.

Actually, in looking at Mark Kohler''s work just now, it''s obvious he''s an up and comer, and he''s got talent. I was surprised at how inexpensive his works are, averaging about $2,000 to $3,000 for a piece. It''s tempting to just go out and buy one...
