(XP as in windows XP, DX as in sad face) XP is doing weird things now. When I ctrl-alt-delete, I used to get the task manager, now it goes to the "windows security" thing where you can log off/do other stuff or go to the task manage. Now it also won''t display my icon next to my name in the start menu. I have double checked the control panel and it is enabled to show the icon but it does not. In addition, when I go to shut down it brings me to a "Shut down windows" message box thing with a pull down that has the options, it used to bring me to a dumb balloony looking thing with shut down, restart, log off as big buttons. (don''t mind this change, but I never told it to). ALSO, when I start up it has a dialog box login screen similar to that of a windows 2000 machine (not the XP login screen with the users listed). I have it specifically set up to auto login, but it does not. I have even used TweakUI to try and get it to auto logon, but it does not. What on earth could be causing this to happen?

I''m not sure about your exact problems but judging from the fact that a lot of your appearance settings have reverted to "classic" style (the windows 2000 like behaviour you are witnessing) ... I''d try setting them back to the XP defaults.

I tried googling it, but then I realized I could not think of what exactly to search for.

Try the display->themes dialog. I know there are windows settings (I disabled those things you speak of manually a few months ago...). Check out tweakxp.org or annoyances.org perhaps.

Hmmm ... I''m not sitting at an XP machine, so I probably have the names a bit off ... but basically, what you want is in Control Panel under either Appearances and Themes, or Taskbar and Start Menu. Or maybe both. ^__^ I''d poke around and see if anything jumps out at you as being suspicious.

teakxp.org looks like an advertising thing...

I''ll mess with the other stuff and see if I get any results.

You must have meant tweakxp.com, it seems to be a real site.

Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Change the way users log on or off.

Using your eyeballs, read the stuff available. That ought to take care of reverting back from reverting to the "old" style of windows user access to the fruity-balloons-and-big-shiny-buttons style of XP.

That should take care of problems 1, 3 and 4. If you set it up right. Just read it and, failing that, get your mother or a small neighbor child to perform these tasks.

Uhm, to get the new style Start menu, right click the start menu button, click Properties and change that radio button on the first tab or just pick that Customize button to fool around with the start menu style you have selected.

OK - on most recent versions of Windows that will happen. The task manager is not brought up via Ctrl+Alt+Del, but Ctrl+Shift+Escape. That skips the "security" screen and goes straight to the task manager.

Also, if you have the "classic" start menu in XP it won''t show your picture at all.

You guys misunderstand me, I didn''t change anything, it changed itself, and I do not see any options that have changed either.

I will now use ctrl-shift-escape, that solves that problem, but as for my picture not showing up on the start menu, I have not changed anything at all, and the setting is still the same, not classic start menu but XP style start menu. It even looks the same except for the icon missing.

The shut down dialogue is also still changed, but I really don''t care about that.

The only thing that really bothers me is that it won''t auto login. I am not ignorant to this, I know where the settings are and they have not changed.

Control Panel -> User accounts -> use welcome screen is unchecked.

Then, in Tweak UI, I try and apply the settings to auto logon, but it does not hold when I restart, though it does hold between instances of the program Tweak UI. (Tweak UI is a powertoy for windows XP by microsoft).

I still can''t figure out what caused all this.
