Hiya All.. I''m looking for references &/or code on the web that I can look at to get ideas for particle systems. Specifically, I''m interested in various implementations of: (1) Particle Movement/Update Algorithms (2) Particle Colors over their life-span It can be for any particle system; explosion modelling, tornado''s, or what have you. I''m building a simple windows GDI application in VC++ 6 that demonstrates each particle system I''m coding. At the moment, I only have one particle system which was mainly copied from Scott Kessler''s implementation -- at http://dman.simplenet.com/particle.html These particle systems are demo''s and I plan to make them freely available [with source, of course.] Thanks, // CHRIS

check out gamasutra.com. they have a article up there right now about this very thing. i have read the first lil bit of it and the author sounds like he knows what he is talking about. the screen shots look pretty cool too.

The article on Gamasutra is very interesting, but it doesn''t deal with details such as motion algorithms or particle-coloring.

Jeff Lander wrote an interesting article on particle-systems for GDM in ''98, and the article is available for download here:

I don''t remember if it dealt with the kind of details you want, and since I don''t have a .PDF-reader installed on my computer (just had to re-install my OS. Hooray for windows (I''m being slightly sarcastic here, hope you can tell )) you''ll have to read it yourself to find out.

you could look at whitchlord''s particle demo that he is having problems controlling the FPS on.
