Hey all, just wondering if anyone knows of any websites that cater for the complete n00b to cars? I have had a look around but can''t find anything that introduces a complete newbie and teaches the basics to an extent where I can go off and understand things a bit better and am able to learn the rest for myself. I know a lot of people seem to just pick this kinda stuff up as they grow up, but I guess it''s just not something that really captured my interest when I was younger, now I''d love to find out more and get clued up, but I feel totally left behind! Magazines and stuff would be good too, but I''d rather just get a primer for free off the net and then look to magazines and stuff to increase my knowledge later on. I really know nothing, so I''m not even 100% sure what I''m looking for, but a bit of an explanation behind things like modding, which cars are good, which are not, learning how to recognise various models etc. Basically I''d like to be able to speak to certain people and have at least some idea what they''re talking about, and before too long I''d like to hope I could be looking at taking lessons and saving for a car myself.. it''d get me out a lot more for sure! Is anyone able to help!! Cheers, Steve

Hi Pal,

I have tried to get in to this a few times myself but other things kept getting in the way. I looked at my local college - they do evening classes in car mechanics, you know, a "short course". Beginner and then advanced level - I''m sure yours would too. I wanted to be able to service my own car and understand the lingo so I know when I''m getting ripped off at the M.O.T.

Speaking of which, that''s next month .... *groan*

The first thing I suggest you do is read Auto Repair for Dummies . I knew nothing about cars, and that book helped me out quite a bit. I was never able to find anything like that on the Web, so you'll either have to buy the book or get it from a library.

Modding is just changing parts on a car to something that's not stock. It can be any part of the car. I don't think there are any sites that talk about this in general, so you'd have to find a website dedicated to modding a particular car model.

What cars are good depends on what you like in cars. Read the stats on cars and reviews in magazines. That'll also help you to recognize different models.

The "Car Talk" book is also pretty good.
