For my game so far, I have written everything, including my blitter, and all the graphics functions. But kinda soon I''m gonna have to start implementing sound stuff, and I was reading about it in Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus earlier today, and it seems to be a lot of work. I''m pretty sure I understand everything it''s saying, but I sort of want to get the game done as quickly as I can (within reason). So I was thinking about using the library from the book for sound (the third library is *only* sound. So I was wondering, has anyone used this lib for sound? Is it fast enough to use? How important it learning semi-low level sound code in the first place? I mean, most game developers use third-party sound libraries anyway right? Thanks for the help!

I''ve read the book as well, and IMHO the sound library isn''t too bad. Personally I''ve have done it with classes but to each his own. The only thing that annoys me about all these dsound wrappers is the lack of mp3 support.

On the plus side however I think I may have found an mp3 decompressor in the golgotha source code.

To answer your question, Andre''s source just uses dsound, and thats not something you''d really bother optimising with the amount of time you want to spend on it. In your case I''d use it.

The sound library in TOTPWG is good. I managed to get a midi and a wav playing in 10 minutes using it. It's simple to use and reasonably fast.

I believe you have to pay royalties to some company if you want to write a mp3 decoder/encoder (not sure though, maybe it was if you're going to use it in a commercial product), so that can be why not many Dsound wrappers include code to read mp3's.

Yeah, I agree...the sound library is really good...

Even I figured it out in a few minutes, and I barely every get things working

that''s right. that''s why most freeware library''s that play mp3''s ask for money if you plan on selling your game.
