He will be missed. Bye Yann.
Same thing happened to me the other day at work. I was sitting here at my desk, and it just hit me. Yea, I am making good money. But in reality, I am just sitting here at a desk, making software that will be forgotten or deleted in a year or two. What is the point?
So that night, I created a pron site, and now I am making a lot more money.

Cya, Yann
I completely understand Yann''s move and wish him the best of luck in life. There is so much more to this world than sitting at a computer. Yes, you can make alot of money with it, but money doesn''t guarantee happiness. Enjoy your life and the world around you. You only get one chance.
Fare well, Yann L. We will miss you. I think I know a little about what you''re saying even though you have much more experience in such matters. I thought the same thing about many hours of my childhood spent in front of the puter; time wasted on pointless pleasure rather than on meaningful relationships with people, the only things that will ever last from this world. I''ll take a lesson from your example. Thank you.

How do meaningful relationships last? Eventually everyone dies.
Anyway, does anyone else find his post very depressing? It sounds like he is telling the novice programmers (which includes me) that being a professional is horrible and you will die sad and alone. Someone say something good about programming to cheer me up please.

Better than digging ditches, or cleaning out latrines. Programming is a fun process, you look at a problem, come up with a solution, and then you implement the solution that you created. Then, after the program is up and running you sit there and think.. "Dear God, what have I done?" when you realized you had several mallocs without frees and the program dumps.

He''s not saying that being a professional is horrible and you will die sad and alone.. he''s saying that he realized it''s not the type of life he wants to live. For some people, the type of life where you sit in front of the computer for hours and days on end is perfectly fine. For others, it''s not. Being a professional does not necessarily mean you have to be on the computer that often, but typically to be the best in any career or industry, you have to make sacrifices. Yann seems to have realized that, for him, those sacrifices are no longer worth it, and that he would rather enjoy other aspects of his life instead of only his work.
Personally, I couldn''t agree with him more.

I hear that. I personally get a great deal of satisfaction out of being able to program--sometimes a little too much, I think--but I honestly could not do it for a living. Currently I make a living through welding (on the side) and through wood-working and construction of custom furniture and cabinets. The metal-work is just a means to an end (paying the bills) in my view, but the wood-working is extremely fulfilling, in a way that computer programming would never be. I know that the pieces I craft could quite possibly be around in a hundred years; not so my current game.
What I would miss the most, however, is the exercise. I have a tendency to get fat if I don''t move around, so the metal-work keeps me in shape.
I say, kudos to Yann for having the guts to move on from something he has invested so much time and energy into. He''ll be missed, most assuredly, but his leaving should not be regretted.
