I am writing my game in DirectX and using Caligari’s GameSpace for all the content. Right now I am using the .x file format to import all of the content. My main problem as I progress is making levels. I have to place them with code. My question is what is a level or map editor where I can import models I have made and place them. Then have the level editor export the level. I can write a loader for the program if it has a proprietary file format as long as it has some kind of documentation. Lastly I need something cheap or better off free. Does anyone else have these problems? What if any level editor is everyone using? Thanks

The problem with level editors are that they are game specific. You could use XML as a level descriptor like I am for Manta-X.

have your GUI interact with the engine. for example- you can create a button which calls a function which tells the engine to output the file, or add a control point, or whatever. your editor is just an interface to translate input from the user to do certain things.
