Draft dodging Dean

Well, I honestly thought that we might have a nice group of candidates to pick from in the next election. That was, until I went to the DrudgeReport and saw in red:
quote:
Dean used obscure back condition to get out of military draft in 1970; now admits that he was not eager to serve, although he says in interview, ''he probably could have''...
Now, normally I would be fine with this, because I honestly could care less if a Presidential candidate served in the military. But the issue I have with this* is that he''s part of the Democratic caucus that has drilled Bush about dodging the draft, yet what does he admit to doing? Assuming the developing story is true, Dean just lost some brownie points.

Why would he admit to it though??? Couldn''t he have gotten away with not admitting it? Just said that his condition prevented him from serving??

I think he''s going for the lesser of two evils - hypocrisy, as opposed to being caught lying.

At least with hypocrisy he still has credibility.

I should hope not!

I should say his credibility is a bit less damaged than a full blown lie.

Yeah I really don''t want Bush...I think I like Clark a little better than Dean though...Kerry is ugly, and doesn''t have a chance...(I''m sorry but it''s true...looks shouldn''t matter of course, but they do when everything''s on TV...)

Probably because he is staff. Along those lines.

Bush willingly signed up for the military, yet he did not do what he signed up to do. Dean did not willingly sign up for the military, it was a conflict he didn't believe in, and he had a back condition that got him out. So what if he "probably could have served?" He didn't have to and didn't want to. Bush, however, was obligated to do his duty in the military.

I'll cede that what he has done is extremely hypocritical, but that doesn't change my stance that he would be a much better man for the job than Bush is. Now, if he wins, decides to go to war with a country, and starts talking about how young men need to start "doing their duty as Americans," then I'll be pissed off.

Edit:

To clarify, if you couldn't already tell, I have no problem with draft dodging. I feel that if the government wants to start a war, yet so many young men and women don't volunteer to take up arms and fight in that war, then the government is clearly going against the will of the people. What I do have a problem with is chicken hawks.

Well, alright.

I haven''t followed much of this, has Dean himself ever really railed bush for draft dodging?

cause if he hadn''t done so himself, I wouldn''t consider it hipocracy.

Are you just assuming he did, or has he?

I''m pretty sure he did...

In recent news, George W. Bush lied about WMD in Iraq. While I can understand people wanting to get out of going to war (which Bush did too), I cant understand people who lie in order to go to war.

Bush still loses.

It is valid to criticize Bush for draft-dodging because he is pro-war. He likes ordering others to kill people and be killed themselves, as long as he''s safe. Dean avoided entering the service but I doubt he''d then turn around and start unnecessary wars.

Dean was obligated to do his duty as well, and weasled his way out of it. Just like Bush did. I don't see the distinction between avoiding service outside the military, and avoiding service inside the military.

I haven''t heard anything about this, and I haven''t followed the Dem candidates very closely and so don''t know what they''re saying about Bush, but I can easily imagine a couple reasonable scenarios where Dean could criticise Bush without being hypocritical. Without knowing what this "drilling" consists of, though, I''ll refrain from speculating. Anybody have specifics?

Yeah Dean should just not be self-righteous about it is all. I don''t really care whether or not the dodged the draft, but if they did, they should at least not either try and act like they did their patriotic duty, or not criticize. Just leave it the hell alone.

Actually, it''s not even an ankh. It''s missing the hook and thingy that looks like a cane.

The fact is that all rich or smart people don't want to waste their lives fighting in a war. I sure wouldn't. Maybe I could code some AI for fighting robots to serve my country

By the way, I've never heard of this ankh but a Google search reveals:

"The Loop of the Anhk also represent the feminine discipline or the (Womb), while the elongated section represent the masculine discipline or the (Penis). These two sacred units then come together and form life."
