Webcam problems

So my friend just gave me a web cam and I connect it to my computer. But I have encountered two huge questions... 1) When I signed up for camerades, I couldn't connect because of this: http://ww.com/postmode.html ; I do use Win XP. How do I fix this? 2) What is the purpose of a webcam? I'm lost. Why do people have webcams? What am I supposed to do with this after I hook it up? P.S. I use it when I chat with my gf. Do you have a bf that you chat with? If not, then you can try taking your own pics and doing stuff to them.

Well, I originally asked my friend for it so that I could see my grandma and my new baby cousin across the other side of the world. But none of my relatives are willing to go through the trouble of hooking up a web cam (they are not very computer literate).

So now I don''t know what to do with it

you dont need to have your own webcam to see others on webcam

just take a few pics and play with them, caz who knows, you might find some1 oneday and you want to show em your pics

if you use msn you can use your webcam when chatting to other people on that, maybe other IM programs let you do that too...

That page said problem #1 could be because you are behind a firewall. Try to find out what TCP (or other layer4 protocol) port number is used. On my linksys cable router, they make it really easy to disable the firewall for certain ports. You can also disable it altogether. Maybe you should try disabling XP's software firewall. (I think it's on by default).

I''m pretty sure I have configured the cable router to drop its firewall. So it''s not the problem with the router. I''m really confused as to how to do the whole XP deal though. Can you teach me?

I think you have to disable it's service. Start-Run->services.msc

anyways, if you want better video chat try Dwyco video. if you manage to ingnore all the perverts which prowl the server (it's like IRC) you get good speed on the video transfer

I''m at the services.msc, but there is nothing there that seems to be associated with a firewall of any sort. ????

In that case, I would guess that the XP firewall isn''t the problem.

How are you connected to the internet? You mentioned a router; how is that connected to the internet? Does it have a built-in modem of some kind, or some other kind of connection?

Problem fixed!!!!

Don''t ask me how. I just restarted the computer, rebooted the router and the cable modem.

Ahahahah!

THANK YOU!!!!! (why does it work when I reboot? I don''t know! Maybe the webcam god was toying with me)

Hardy har har. No, no porn. (That was a funny webpage though, Ilici!)

THIS IS SO NEAT! I can tape my turtles playing around (although, I think my turtle Tickle didn''t like being on camera, ''cause he just started peeing everywhere).

My cousins from HK always wanted to see what my turtles look like, and this is 10 times better than sending them pictures!

AND, my new baby cousin can know what I look like now. This is awesome!
