Does anyone know of any good book or site that provides information on creating a database engine using C++. I have no intention of putting Oracle or MySQL out of business, just need information on how to create an efficient non-proprietory database. Thank you.

A good way of looking this stuff up is to think of a decent university and see if you can get a module information page. For example, one university in Britain has this page:
Reading List.

MIT's OCW has this course.
Edit: whoops, that last page wasn't completely relevant.
