I''m thinking this is a math question for you guys. I have a 3D world and I want to draw a 2D sprite onto the surface. What I am looking for is to translate a specific 3D coordinate into 2D screen space, and draw the overlay sprite relative to that vertex. Is there a way to do this without using a billboard, or should I just go and use a billboard?

Well, it really depends on what you''re doing conceptually.

If the sprite is "within" the 3D world, such as a sprite of a tree or a fireball or whatever, use billboarding. It''s really the most convenient solution.

If the sprite is a graphic element on top of the scene, such as a crosshairs, you can use gluProject to transform the target vertex to screen space and draw from there.
