Hi im in the middle of designing a chess game with a 3d GUI. ive researched and messing around with Java3D, want to consider as many options as possible at this stage, does anyone know of any other 3d api''s for java and where i can get some solid info on them. Also looking for opinions on the best java compiler to use looking into Jikes at the moment but peoples experiences would be helpful. Thanks

LWJGL OpenGL, OpenAL & input bindings.
Jogl Semi official set of OpenGL bindings, works with Swing & AWT.
Xith3D High level scenegraph API built on top of Jogl. Activly developed and very similar API to Java3D.

This isn''t as big of an issue as it is with C/C++. You can pretty much expect all Java compilers to have pretty much the same bytecode output. There is a standard after all, though I haven''t read it and I don''t know how much flexibility compiler vendors have with bytecode generation. The real key to how Java performs (aside from programmer optimizations) lies in the hands of the runtime environment.

Jikes has a very, very fast compile time last I checked. And the Eclipse IDE ships with a compiler which compiles your code class files when you save them (might even be Jikes, as Eclipse was started by IBM folks), and it is fast.
