So, how many of you guys listen to progressive rock/metal? I''m looking for some more bands in the genre .. I already love King Crimson, Dream Theater, and Rush, but I need more! Any recommendations?

*shrug* The counter to "regressive" rock, I presume.

The Darkness from UK is getting pretty huge. I think they''re kind of amusing.

It''s kind of hard to describe. Once you hear it, you''ll know what it sounds like .. It''s like rock/metal with qualities from jazz and classical.

Take a listen to some of the songs off Dream Theater''s Images and Words: Images and Words

And listen to the song, "When The Water Breaks" off this cd: Liquid Tension Experiment 2

D minor AND major? OMFG What are you thinking?

I don''t like the term progressive. It''s as bad an adjective for music as alternative. But the style itself is interesting.

Yeah it''s kind of a strange term. The music is great, it''s just hard to describe with words.

A Dm7th chord is really a Dm DOMINANT 7th chord. This means the 7th is flatted. A D minor major 7th chord, is a 7th chord without a 7th flatted, but a regular 7th.

Edits are in BOLD.

Actually putting thought into your lyrics and compositions and then playing your ass off. Kinda the opposite of glam.

Actually you have no idea what you are talking about.

Fates Warning is OK. Queensryche is semi-prog. Liquid Tension Experiment (which is really just the guys from Dream Theater for the most part). Any of the DT spin-off bands is probably OK.

So it''s not a style of music, but an idea of music, kind of like indie?

Isnt a I7 chord a I dominant 7 chord? and therefore 1 3 5 b7? And when you go I M7 you get 1 3 5 7? so a ImM7 = 1 b3 5 7? If its not please correct me.

I''ve already checked out Fates Warning and Queensryche, and they were OK .. but still aren''t mind-blowing like a lot of Dream Theater''s material.

You should definitely check out Gentle Giant. "Octopus" is a good place to start.

I''ll check them out. I like the song: "The Boys in the Band." Really cool stuff.

Whoa, I just checked that out and all I have to say is: damn. I ''m definitely gonna buy this. This is John Myung''s side project isn''t it?

Hmm, I did a little amazon searching and found Gordian Knot. If you''re into prog-rock or fusion-esque music, check them out.

Myung is part of the project, yeah; I got into them because I''m a huge King''s X fan, and absolutely love Ty Tabor''s guitar playing.

Progressive rock is rock that DOESN''T follow the verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus pattern. Its rock music that is a new new beast by the end of every song. Its constantly moves forward.... the songs progress .

Dark Tranquillity is a dark/progressive metal band that I love .
