He''s right. I work in retail too; the "deals" are just an illusion. 9 times out of 10 you could have gotten a better deal last week sometime.

But people are morons who believe advertising. Oh well.

Heh, I worked in retail for 3 years. Damn shame how many people flock to the mall just to get ripped off.

It''s pretty obvious, but sometimes you do luck out and get something rather crappy for cheap. Like a free floppy drive. Very useful!

nobody can complain about working on Black Friday until they''ve worked at a clothing store. with a store layout that packs as much clothes in as possible. like pacific sunwear.

in stores like that, it''s not having to deal with about 200 violent customers demands in the store at one time. (ok, maybe partly). it''s walking away from a clothing rack for one second, and coming back and seeing every article of clothing pulled halfawy out, clothes on the ground, and the entire thing one horrid mess.

people simply lack the mental capacity to push a shirt back into the rack after they tear it halfway out with their hands.

I must sympathize with you retail workers, but I have a special bti of dread reserved for my day at work today....working till close at a Subway which lies exactly halfway between all the adjacent towns and the big super-mall, the Fox Valley Mall.

Irate, tired, HUNGRY shoppers who will not be able to concieve of waiting in line for one more damn second, needing food. What a season this will be

I think you should stop whining and do your jobs. Ive been to clothings stores on several occasions, and actually not looked at shirts/pants because the stupid clerks follow me around and anytime I unfold anything or mess up their little display at all, they roll their eyes and let out a big sigh to very obviously let me know that they are annoyed. Its what your paid to do. Your there until the store closes either way. Its not like you go home sooner if theres less clothes to fold is it? So you have a couple busy days a year. Just balance that out with all the days that you had nothing to do but stand around with your thumb up your ass.

Cranky customers on the other hand are a different story. Its one thing if you have to fold a shirt after someone has looked at it, but if any customers act like jerks to you for any reason (did you give them a reason?), then they can go to hell.

Actually it is like that. Educate yourself before exposing your profound ignorance.

My store has to pay people to stay after for at least an hour a night to clean up your mess because you''re too fucking lazy to clean up after yourself.

What, you think we let our employees go home the second the store closes?

Yup. My ex worked in a shoe store, and I can''t tell you how many times she had to stay 2 hours past closing for this reason or that.
Pissed her off, and rightly so ...

When I was working in retail, the store closed at 9pm, customers still shopped until 9:30pm, and after cleaning up we would leave no sooner than 10:30pm. Man I''m glad thats over.

Hmm, I went to the stores and got the advertised deals that I wanted. I have been doing so for years. If you''re too lazy to get to the store early, of course you aren''t going to get what you want.

I went to the store today. Left the house at 9, stopped by Macy''s, Dr. Jay''s and Modell''s. Found great deals. As advertised. Perhaps the store(s) you work for suck(s)?

Well, the worst thing about black friday here would be the traffic. Because the mall, 2 large shopping centers with best buy, target, circuit city, barnes and noble, and a whole bunch of other big stores are on the same street. Not even half a mile apart. 1 street light seperates these locations. The traffic is insane. Now if there was a WalMart in the vicinity, it would be hell on earth.

Oh, and I should mention that they were giving out free baseballs at Mo''s (Modell''s, for the uninitiated). No purchase required. Go Yankees!

And now you know why I bike everywhere

There''s a 9/10 chance that those "deals" were better within the past month when sales are down.

This is how retail works; there are normally these price points for an item:

- Full Retail
- Regular Sale
- "Special" Sale
- Loss Leader/Wholesale
- Liquidation

- Full Retail is what suckers pay; if you ever buy anything at full retail you''re just lazy and you deserve to get ripped off. This is typically 2-3x more than wholesale price
- Regular sale; at the very most, this is what you should spend on an item; chances are you''ll find things priced this way 5/8ths of the time; some items are usually at this price all year long (it''s a scam; things that are permanently on "sale" from the retail price seem like a better deal; when in actuality this "sale" price is the normal price)
- Special Sale; this is a real sale price, usually around 10% cheaper than the "regular" sale price.
- Loss Leader/Wholesale; this is the price a store pays for an item, and you''ll almost never see a store offer items for this price. If they do, then it''s a special non-garunteed ad item of limited supply that no one has any actual chance of obtaining.
- Liquidation; Lowest price; used when the store desperately needs more stock space for new merchandise.

The company I work for had a full 90% of our merchandise at the "regular sale" price for black friday; the week before our prices were an average 8% less.

It''s a scam. All buisinesses trying to sell you something are trying to scam you. Never think different for a minute.

Actually, I''ve been into each of those stores several times in the past month; I''m a Modell''s MVP member, for instance. I bought a jacket for what I know to be half the price I would have paid ten days ago.

I''m not trying to refute the scammish nature of the whole Black Friday thing. I''m just saying, sometimes it works.

ORANGE CITY, Fla. - A mob of shoppers rushing for a sale on DVD players trampled the first woman in line and knocked her unconscious as they scrambled for the shelves at a Wal-Mart Supercenter.

Patricia VanLester had her eye on a $29 DVD player, but when the siren blared at 6 a.m. Friday announcing the start to the post-Thanksgiving sale, the 41-year-old was knocked to the ground by the frenzy of shoppers behind her.

"She got pushed down, and they walked over her like a herd of elephants," said VanLester''s sister, Linda Ellzey. "I told them, `Stop stepping on my sister! She''s on the ground!''"

Ellzey said some shoppers tried to help VanLester, and one employee helped Ellzey reach her sister, but most people just continued their rush for deals.

"All they cared about was a stupid DVD player," she said Saturday.

Paramedics called to the store found VanLester unconscious on top of a DVD player, surrounded by shoppers seemingly oblivious to her, said Mark O''Keefe, a spokesman for EVAC Ambulance.

Yes, of course. Ms. VanLester wouldn''t have done the same to anyone else under different circumstances, nosireebob.

People are cruel, selfish and greedy. That''s nothing new. What is offensive in that story, however, is the piousness of the victim''s sister and how she tries to portray her sister - who was at the front of the line for the same "stupid DVD player" - as somehow better than the people who trampled her.

Ever tried standing in front of a surging mob? This happens all the time (see concert mishaps for corroboration). Not that I''m heartless or anything... Actually, I am, but that''s not the point.
