can you use SDL for commercial games?

Yes. SDL uses the LGPL license (Library General Public License), which isn''t as strict as the GPL. Any incarnations of SDL itself have to be released under the LGPL (just like the GPL), but you can release another program with the library without having to release it under the LGPL.

Though I''m not sure if you can statically link it.

The LGPL requires that the recipient of the software linking to an LGPL library must be able to replace and modify the LGPL library. So, no, you cannot normally statically link to SDL without additional effort (distributing object files and such). However, SDL''s license allows for embedded platforms that cannot perform dynamic linking to potentially statically link to SDL (for more information on that, you''d have to check the libsdl page and/or ask on the mailing list).

In short: follow the directions here.

I believe it''s already been used for several commercial titles. Most of Loki''s ports of games to Linux used it IIRC, including Tribes 2.
