Anyone able to speed read? How did you learn? Did it come naturally? I read really slow, which is sad since I love to read. I'm trying to figure out how I can improve my skillz. I've looked at stuff like this but it's more money than I have to spend. Maybe a speed reading book would work. BTW, the first test of that EyeQ thingy says I read about 260 words per minute, if that helps put things in perspective. [edited by - BradDaBug on December 29, 2003 6:46:01 PM]

Ew.. the site becomes a fullscreen window. On top of that.. the "exercises" are so freakin stupid. Showing you the Wizard of Oz at 10,000 WPM? Anyway, the test showed that I didn''t change at all, reading at 600 WPM.

I think I speed read, but I''m not sure what that''s defined as. I hear that people who read slowly tend to read aloud to themselves, which may be what you should try to fix. It came naturally, I''ve never heard of speed reading books or anything (or didn''t take them seriously.)

I know how you feel. I read almost as slow as talking speed (or thereabouts) but it hardly matters to me... If I read faster, I simply loose information. it''s not as interesting.
I know a bunch of people who can read 2 books a day (~1000 pages, and do often) and they really just don''t get the more subtle points of the story.. they miss all the detail and references to other parts of the book.

and if it''s annoying you how slow your reading, maybe the book is no good or not holding your interest? ''speed reading'' to me is unimportant, whats more important is getting so wrapped up that you realise at the last minute it''s 5am (I seem to do this a lot), the time seems to go pretty quick when it''s a good book.

Speed reading is useless. Do you think Einstein practiced it? You don''t absorb knowledge that way, and even if you do, you don''t get any understanding from it.

Reading it is one thing, using what you read is another. When you read at a normal rate, your brain thinks about stuff as you read along. You can speed read and know what''s going on, but you lose the ability for your brain to make perfect sense of small things and just take in the scenery (figuratively).

And yeah, usually if you read slow it''s because you''re saying things to yourself, like reading outloud except not speaking. If you want to read faster, read concepts and ideas, not words.
