label for form elements

Hey, This is a relatively minor request, but I think it would be a good addition. Any place where there are form elements with an associated label, it would be nice if you could wrap the label in the label tag. This would do a few things, first it would improve accessibility (ie. 508). Second, and this is what sparked this, it would make it easier from a usability perspective for regular users. For example, when posting a response or new post in the forums, you''d be able to click the check box''s label to activate it instead of having to home in on the little 10x10 px checkbox control. It''s a little thing, but it would be easy to implement, all you''d have to change is add an ID property to the checkbox
<input id="Sig" name="Sig" type="checkbox" value="yes" />
<label for="Sig">Include my profile signature.</label>
Thanks ... keep up the good work on the site, it''s definitely a great resource :-) Joel Martinez http://www.codecube.net/

I''ve never seen the ''label'' tag before. Which HTML standard is it part of?

The GDNet code is horrible anyway. When the new forums come out they''ll hopefully replace everything with well-formed XHTML

=P

The only html code that has a chance of getting close to that is code that was outputted from XSL stylesheets. But that''s only because it is very difficult to make it work if it isn''t well-formed.

Conforming to XHTML just wasn''t a goal. Maybe someday.

I don''t of previous versions, but I know it''s in 4.0 and up. either way, it would degrade gracefully in older/text browsers.

I do agree about the xhtml ... I wonder if GDNet has high bandwidth costs and what a nice xhtml/css makeover would do to said cost. unfortunatley, it''ll probably be one of those ain''t broke, don''t fix it deals ... I can understand.

Oh believe me, I think xhtml + css is *extremely* cool. But it's a matter of putting in the time. Dave has mentioned wanting to attempt to make a transition down the line too.

Another thing concerning usability (though I can''t think of a way around this:
I try to avoid using the mouse while on the computer because its much faster not having to constantly switch between a mouse and keyboard (yes, I''m an emacs person). Most programs have good enough shortcuts that I wouldn''t mind being on a computer without a mouse at all. However, Internet surfing would be quite difficult without a mouse if not for Mozilla''s handy feature of being able to just type and it will automatically search through all links as you type. Unfortunately, this feature is only useful for links which contain text. Graphic only links, you must go to a nearby text link and tab or shift-tab to it. Unfortunately, most of the links on Gamedev are graphics and there are often no nearby text links, especially while posting messages on the forums (I have to tab through all the "icons" in order to get the the Message: part). It would be nice if there were occasional links with text in them

It''d allow for a significant feature - user-customisable themes. Users would not only be able to select one from a number of stylesheets that you provide, but they could even give the URL of a stylesheet stored somewhere else online, allowing people to tweak the colors to exactly how they want.

Oh, and I''m glad to hear you''re using XSL stylesheets. Does this mean we might see GDNet on WAP sometime in the future? People could stay in the Lounge via their phones
