For the last while my team has been using .X files for the game we are working on. It''s been great so far; we''ve got an animated model walking around with minimal effort. However, we have no idea how to get a guy to hold something in his hand while he is walking around. Also, we would like him to be able to shoot while he is running and looking around. Another thing that would be nice is if we could store a point at the end if the gun to indicated where the particle effect for shooting is positioned. Can the .X format support all this or should I use the md2 or md3 format instead? If the later is the case then are there any legal issues with regards to ID Soft? Thanks for the help.

I do not know too much about the .x format but you should be able to modify it (text or binary editor, or your custom exporter) to have an "attachment node" (I would suggest a ray so you have its origin and proper direction but you can use just an xyz coordinate or whatever you see fit)

Ex. make a model of a man in the .x format, edit the .x file by adding a ray somewhere in the file that originates from his ass and points away from his body, make a model of a tail in the .x format.

Use this node's position during rendering to adjust the attached object's position and orientation. It should appear as if the attachment is "stuck" to the attachment node.

Ex. In game determine if you want the man to have a tail. If so, load the tail model and position it on the ray that is attached to it's ass.
