Ok, I know all about how distributing roms is illegal and all that crap, and I don''t intend to do that. What I do need to know, is how do I get from having my physical rom chip, to getting it to my PC and playing it with a emulator? What hardware and software (where can I get it) do I need? Thanks in advance.

You could try to somehow (via a serial cable) connect it to your computer. If you have Linux, it will hopefully register it as a device (I am not too sure on this, someone correct me if I am wrong) and place it in the /dev/ directory. Then, you would mount it and copy the contents the bingo you have yourself a ROM file.

Rate me up.

Ah, sorry forgot to name the system, I''m looking to use Nintendo 64. Is there some kind of reader, (other than the n64 itself) that connects to your PC and allows the data to be transfered?

The trouble with the N64 is that there was never much of a homebrew development scene for it, which means there is a distinct lack of commercial devices for copying data to and from carts. You may be forced to find out the cart pinout format for the system and make one of your own.

I don''t know a great deal about the topic (my only qualification is a smidgeon of GBA development), so take everything I''ve said with a pinch of salt.

Hmm... theres got to be one for sale somewhere, since the number of commercial n64 roms on the web is massive. Its just a matter of where.

if you own the physical rom cartridge it is LEGAL to download the rom image from someone who has already ripped the rom.

But isn''t it illegal to distribute it? Therefor, I would be taking part in a crime by accepting the illegal trade.

Rejoice, I saw that, but the porblem is, is that I don''t own a n64, I was hoping I could find some kind of reader, that doesn''t play the game, but just transfers the data to your pc.

hmm.. gonan be hard to do this.. If I''m correct, the N64 cart is made up of three main componets, the ROM chip, EEPROM chip, and a memory controller.

Since it transfers data through a standard data bus, I guess it would be possible to wire your own little converter plug or something, plug it into your PC''s parallel port, and write a simple program that interfaces with the serial port and retrieves the data from the game''s ROM.

I understand the simplicity of how it could be done, theres the problem that I am an artist, hardly know anything about programming or electronics. I wouldn''t mind buying someone''s little homemade plug and porgram. If I could be walked through what to buy, and how to assemble it, I could do it, but I''m sure I won''t be able find that out. So I''m gonna have to stick to buying one. Just gotta find it.
