ENGINE COMPARISON SURVEY
Advertisement
Original Post
i suppose it''s been done before so excuse me if it''s so.
what i propose is to create an informational topic related to the latest and possibly the best FREE or LOW COST engines. i guess lots of people are lurking around the net looking for such info and based on my own experience, there is no such comparison around. or at least i was unable to find one. i guess it will always come in handy to check whether the engine you think is best for your game is really the one for the job. since i myself am having some issues regarding this matter, i''d like to ask you to share your wisdom, but let''s do it as it should be so everyone could possibly get some profit out of it. here are the features i find most intriguing about an engine. suggestions are ofcourse welcome. let''s do the survey in a form, similar to this one:
engine name: blabla
cost: free
license: freeware, commercial, open source
obligations / restrictions: royalties required, no commercial games can be made...
platform: pc, mac, unix...
integrated tools: level editor, shader, 3ds plugins, bsp generator...
documentation: yes, no, poor, in french...
any titles done with it: no...
number of maximum polygons the engine is capable to push: 20000
technologies supported: d3d, opengl, dx 8.1...
rendering capabilities: dynamic lightning and shadows, multiple lod, particle systems, cartoon shader, glow effects, water effects...
physics and animation features: skeletal character animation, phoneme based facial animation and lip sync, animated hair, dynamic object morphing...
significant features: anything you may find interesting...
ai: trigger based events, goal based events, complex npc behaviours, ...
collision detection: bsp collision detection, line of sight testing, external physics support...
audio subsystem: yes - support for dolby 5.1 and eax, dynamic 3d positional sound, no, cd quality sound...
multiplayer games support: yes via TCP and IPX, no...
recommended game type: 3rd person adventure, 1st person shooter...
others: anything you may find interesting...
works best with: 3ds max 5, gmax, milkshape...
stability: stable, unstable, very unstable...
verdict: very good engine for 1st person shooters with low polygon models, less particle effects and low quality textures.
your experience with the engine: 1 year extensive, 2 months,
please post opinions only if you have some good experience with the engine you''d like to speak about. product sheets can be found easily, what matters here is YOUR opinion based on REAL LIFE experience, not on author''s demos or screenshots.

Exactly how many posts does it take to lose the newb title, anyways?
To no longer be a "n00B_R2D2!!one!!3.141592654" you must stop asking any kind of question on message boards. You should ask the google search engine instead, even if it's not the kind of question google can answer. You must also have a large e-penis, and be condescending to people with smaller e-penises.

People who call others "noobs" are usually "noobs" themselves.

The best thing about not being a "n00b" is that you can be a complete prick to people on the internet. Because it's ok to be a prick if you're a hacker. cause that's what hackers do man. It's true, I saw it written on a website. Hackers don't have to adhere to the normal standards of politeness like everyone else because they're socially inept- erm I mean cooool. There's no better way to take out your social inadequecies than to be a complete bum tunnel on the internet.

Chill out everyone.
I could have said: Well, by looking on Google I found that there is a website with a list of 3d engines and features of them blah blah blah blah.
Instead I felt a little frisky so I said what I did. Judge me if you will based on how I spelled "newbie," for I care not of so hard as to start an argument about it. Good day.

Next time you feel frisky don''t post at all. Take the elitist n00b-bashing to GameFAQs forums or something.
Now to get back on topic...
Genesis3D is a good engine, if somewhat out of date (it''s about Quake2 or Unreal1 quality). It''s cousin, Destiny3D, is in development right now and looks promising.
well anyway.. I HOPE no one has taken this n00b thing seriously... please tell me I'm right..

Because google can engage in a discussion with you as to what, in its opinion, is the best 3D engine? Amazing that.
Sad but true...

The original 3D Engines List itself is dead, but there's a more recent one which, while it's not been updated since 2001 (according to the 'about' page) has a more up-to-date listing.
[Edit: I just saw that the new list has exactly the same number of engines as the old list, according to its report. Unless they're incredibly lucky, it's probably not very helpful. My bad. ]
