Having a lot of peripherals on your computer will require large amounts of power like that. This means that, if you have 10 RAID SCSI disks, 3 network cards, an external (semi external, like that Audigy that goes in the drive bay) audio card, DVD-ROMS, USB devises and a wireless keyboard and mouse -- you want a case with about 500 watts or one of the devices will complain that it does not have enough power and will not work.

will, cpu like amd 64, 1gb ram, 19in crt, fx5900, other essential stuf but no wireless stuff, no raid, no network card, no external stuff work fine on a 420watt case?

As long as you get a high quality power supply like an Antec, it shouldn''t be a big concern. I got an Antec SLK2600AMB case with a 300 watt power supply included ($60 with free shipping at E-Wiz.com... make sure you buy it through Pricewatch for the discount) and it runs fine with:

Asus A7V8X-X Mobo
512Mb RAM
AMD Athlon 2500+
40 GB Western Digital hard drive
52X CD-ROM
PCI Sound Blaster Live sound card
AGP GeForce2 MX video card
PCI Modem
PCI Network Card
2 case fans (connected to mobo)
floppy drive

The monitor uses its own power supply, so it shouldn''t make a difference.
