I love math or procedural art! It''s so cool, so I thought I should make a thread about it. Unfortunately, all my cool stuff was never really saved, so I just have a few 1d cellular automata (all the ones I have saved were totallistic, but still pretty cool looking) Anyway, it''s only two pictures, but I think they''re pretty cool, and later I''ll see if I can find some of my old fractals. This was generated using a totallistic rule, but it can also be made using rule 150. This one just looks cool. Anyway I''d love for you to share some of your cool math art things. yep, "math-art", esp. fractals are cool

i have a little page with some fractals i made a year ago here

Wow, those are really cool! It makes me wish I had bothered to put some kind of input handling in my fractal generator, so I could zoom in. I also love how your coloring tricks make them almost look like completely different fractals. How did you do that red gradient one?

EDIT: And the first one, that's also really really cool

thanks
unfortunately i have no idea how exactly i made each one. i just ''played'' with the color function and its parameters by doing things from multiplying or adding constants, multiplying trig functions of one parameter to the other and whatever else i came up with...this produced a lot of weird looking or distorted images but some interesting ones that i deemed worthy to save

Yes, in five minutes I can get out a rule 30, which is asymetric.

*five minutes pass*

Rule 30, rule 110 is also asymetric, as is 225 and 45, but I can''t remember the others if there were any. These ones aren''t totalistic either, the totalistic ones are always going to be symetric.

Of course
I, personally, find evolved images much cooler than fractals.

I always thought fractals were cooler. Whenever I see "evolved" imgages, there is always a catch, a trick, to making them. They don't start from chaos.

Fractals show the inherently complex and beautifull nature of the universe.

[edit: I have thought about this before. It would be interesting if you started with a huge neural net that you trained using genetic algorithms, selecting the most asthetically pleasing each time, or ranking them perhaps.]

Holy shit! That stuff is cool as hell! I can't believe I've never heard about this before.

EDIT: I used to love fractals, but after a while it seemed that all I could find were julia sets and mandlebrot sets, and after seeing them for a million times I got bored of them, but they are still pretty neat, I love zooming in and in and in on them.

Amazing what you can do with a little randomness ...

lol, chaos is exactly why I like evolved things - they start out randomly generated and get refined into something cool, and we all know processes are better than products =-P

How do these evolved images evolve their equations? Do you know of any good links to get me introduced to implementing this kind of thing? I think they are pretty cool, even if they do involve human interaction.

I''m not really sure on the exact method used, but I believe a formula is evolved taking two inputs (x and y) that returns a number represnting the pixel color at that location (or it might one formula per channel or somesuch). The mothod used for that is most probably evolutionary programming. I haven''t found any really good advanced information about it, but http://www.genetic-programming.org/ is a good place to start.

See that''s the thing, I don''t think they do start out chaotic, I''m pretty sure they are helped along, and I don''t mean by the selection process. They are inherently able to generate interesting images, that''s what I''m saying. Fractals are interesting because they are, these other "evolved" images are interesting because someone designed them to be outside of the actual selection process.

What about that drawing thing that bishop_pass has talked about? Cant remember what its called at the moment...

I guess you could say they were helped out, but only in that humans picked which image they liked best and the computer produced variations of it and the proces was repeated for a few iterations. Fractals aren''t any different really: people generally don''t post the ones that aren''t nice looking.

Here are the juicy details. It's done with Lisp.

Now, everyone take note. I've said this before when I first brought those images to everyone's attention, and I'll say it again: We have one program which has not fallen into the trap of having a trademark style with regard to its output. Each image is always fresh and distinctive from the other images created by the same program. Do you know of any game graphics or fractals that do that?

Bishop Pass, that looks very cool. I thought about that after we''d just studied Mendelian genetics in bio. Do you have any more sources for that kind of thing (evolving plants, etc.)? And do you know if anybody''s done this: extracting a genetic info from photographs of trees, so they can be classified and rebuilt in 3D? That would be useful.
