Hello... Is there some kind of formal document used in the gaming industry that relates to gameplay??? Maybe something like a formal spec. document, but only for gameplay. Cheers Paul

I think the intended game-play would be recorded in the design doc.
The trade-off between price and quality does not exist in Japan. Rather, the idea that high quality brings on cost reduction is widely accepted.-- Tajima & Matsubara

Yeah the design doc is pretty common thing. The actual format of the design doc is not really standardized, though.

For reference, the design docs at our company are roughly organized like this:

1.0 Overview
1.1 Objective
1.2 Look and feel
1.3 Game mechanics (this is where most of the interesting stuff goes)
1.4 Features
2 Menus
3 UI
3.1 Controls
3.2 Layout
3.3 Menu flow chart
4 Game flow

edit: used to say "the design doc is a pretty thing".. although I do admit that they can be attractive.
