I was wondering what mail servers you people use, I mean your own mail server on a local computer. So what servers (MTA/IMAP/POP) servers do you use? What experience do you have with this server? Would you chose a different one if you could? What kind of setup do you have? Right now, I have a pretty cool setup IMHO. I have the Postfix MTA system as the SMTP daemon and local queue manager. I have it compiled with the Cyrus SASL authentication library and it uses SASLAUTHD to authenticate through a PAM interface (lookup is done from local UNIX user database.) It also allows TLS/SSL certificates to allow safe transfers using OpenSSL (I have a custom made certificate, NOT a CA-Auth certified one, those are too costly.) The mail relay is mostly closed to all but authenticated users. I will probably use my ISP’s mail relay (smtp.comcast.net) because I know that some email providers filter SMTP requests from cable networks (hotmail, for one.) Right now, I am compiling the Cyrus IMAP (with SASL2 authentication enabled) and hopefully will get it running soon. I am happy with this, it is pretty tide down security wise and is easy to use. Postfix/Cyrus is probably the best couple available. [edited by - aftermath on January 8, 2004 1:26:41 AM]

Bump.

This post went down fast. Someone must have something to share about their experience with mailsevers.
